Apparently, there are only two possible explanations for all of these recent child drownings:
1. There are suddenly hundreds of terrible parents.
OR…
2. People aren’t perfect.
As a grieving parent, I can tell you which one is true.
Parents get distracted. They answer the door. They help another child. They unload groceries. They think someone else is watching. They make human mistakes.
Children, on the other hand, are incredibly fast, incredibly quiet, and drowning is almost always silent.
If our answer is simply, “Parents need to watch their kids better,” we’ll continue having this same heartbreaking conversation over and over again.
Instead, let’s acknowledge reality: humans are imperfect. That’s why we need layers of protection.
âś… Constant, active supervision.
âś… Swim lessons.
âś… Four-sided fencing.
âś… Self-closing, self-latching gates.
âś… Pool alarms.
âś… CPR training.
Pool alarms aren’t there because parents don’t love their children.
They’re there because parents are human.
If one alarm gives a family the few extra seconds they need to save a child’s life, it’s worth every penny.
Let’s stop pretending perfection is the solution and start putting protections in place that save lives.
