Paul with a nice scamp he caught with me recently. There a been a bit of an uptick in scamps and they are welcome “bycatch” while targeting gags. I’ve had also had a lot of luck jigging them this year.

In my opinion they are the best eating grouper we catch in the south Atlantic.

Been a minute since I posted a fishing repot - about time I get to it again.

Marsh caught this stud cobia bottom fishing with me the other day. It hit on one of our first drops and after a long tussle with the oceajigger it popped up to the surface with another clearly legal (upper 30”s) follower. I immediately grabbed a rod, a menhaden and went to hook up the follower. Then Marsh said something that’s one of my favorite moments of this year.

He looked over at me, rod doubled over, and said (and I’m paraphrasing a bit) “we don’t really need a second one…let’s focus on this one and get it on the boat”

While that gave us both a great laugh it’s also a moment to sit back and remember a few things. That we don’t need to be greedy and be happy in the moment. Also, get the guys PB cobia over the gunnel first.

Well done buddy - this fish made for a bunch of fine means I am sure. We also got our boat limit of gags, scamp, graysby, vermillion, triggers, jacks, grunts and all types of bottom fish.

I have plenty of openings all summer. Inshore, nearshore and offshore.

I was fortunate to get a glimpse of the SpaceX launch. It was honestly even more impressive in person.

Phew it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything….but it’s been a busy year. Maybe I’ll just start dumping a years worth of content.

For the last several years I have a photo of posing with a wahoo this time of year. While we couldn’t make that happen this year, instead her dad is the stand in for this years photos. We blistered the wahoo, landed two big sailfish and blackfin. Literally constant action. Killer day in beautiful conditions.

Inshore is decent, offshore trolling is 🔥 and good bottomfishing. Great mackerel nearshore.

Juvenile gag grouper caught along a estuarine grass flat. Gag , like many offshore species actually spend the earliest part of their lives growing up in estuarine environments among the grass flats and oyster beds. This is to say that healthy estuarine ecosystems are critical to the health of so many species, even those we consider to be primarily offshore deep(er) water fish. This is why clean water and protections for critical habitat like our our shallow water submerged aquatic vegetation environments are so critical for healthy and diverse ecosystems, both inshore and off.

Juvenile gags are not an uncommon catch this time of year, but many of us have been seeing a lot more the last 2-3 years so we can be hopeful that rebuilding efforts are working for this important species.

I’ve spent the last few years trying to avoid catching f flounder outside of the season - and we’ve done a good job by changing tactics and areas I frequent. But you can’t avoid them all - this one was over 7lbs and fell for a . What a beast!

***Commercial Flounder Season Just announced***

OPEN DAYS: Oct 𝟻̶, 0̶6̶, 7, 𝟷̶𝟸̶, 13……also 15 and 16th if the season is open

In NC, if you’re a commercial fishing license holder, it’s legal to commercially harvest flounder, during the open season, while on a charter trip. As a commercial license holder, I will offer inshore trips targeting flounder (and other inshore species) in my pathfinder. The season opens Oct 2nd and I will post my open dates below. In 2023 the season was open barely more than a week until the quota was caught. So I will book trips through Oct 12th or so - you can gamble on it being open longer and book later.

OPEN DAYS: Oct 𝟻̶, 0̶6̶, 7, 𝟷̶𝟸̶, 13……also 15 and 16th if the season is open. I’m recommending 3/4 days.
