Message from Coach Christy: One of the best ways to learn a skill is to watch the very best perform that skill. What I enjoy most about spring starts with March Madness. You could not have asked for a better NCAA championship game. Both North Carolina and Villanova deserved to win. The defense was terrific. The teamwork and unselfish play was outstanding. The energy level on the court and in the stands could not have been higher.
The game ended on the final play when from the top of the key, Kris Jenkins made a 3 pointer that was in the air when the buzzer sounded. He is a very good three-point shooter. His mother is responsible for teaching him that skill. She was asked how she did it. She said when Kris was younger he was not allowed to take any shots BEYOND the foul line, understanding correctly that in the early years Kris needed to learn the correct mechanics and as he got further away from the basket he was throwing the ball and NOT shooting it and she put a stop to it.
I know how exciting it is to put a ball in the basket from beyond the three-point line, but you will never get there unless you practice shooting over and over again from inside the foul line. When you are consistently making ten out of ten shots, move back a foot and begin again. It takes patience, LOTS of patience, but it is worth it. There is nothing better than the feeling you get when you actually believe and can visualize every shot that leaves your hand going in the basket. Begin today, get close to the basket and start your journey. Maybe one day you, too, will experience what Kris Jenkins and his teammates felt in Houston, TX on April 4, 2016. Hoping to see you in July for Basic Basketball Camp where we will be putting more emphasis on shooting.
