NCAA D2 REGIONAL 6 PREVIEW

The weather is still in the upper fifties, but it is going to be hotter than that in the gym at Western State in Gunnison as the Region 6 tournament is taking place on Saturday March 1st. The 12 teams as traveling from Kansas, Nebraska, California, New Mexico, BC Canada and around Colorado to wrestle for the top 3 spots. With a total of 18 wrestlers from around the county in the 6 regionals all heading to the National Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana on March 14th and 15th, 2025.
The teams include Adams State ( #18), Cal poly Humboldt, Chadron State, Colorado Mesa ( # 24), Colorado School of Mines ( # 23), Colorado State Pueblo, Fort Hayes State, Neb – Kearney ( # 2), New Mexica Highland, San Francisco State ( # 22), Simon Fraser, and Western Colorado ( # 13). The team ranking is from 2/26/25 NWCA edition.
Let’s look at the ranked wrestlers in the 10 weight classes, with 39 wrestlers ranked by The Open Mat. UNK leads the list with 9 out of 10 weight classes having ranked wrestlers.

It is going to be an exciting tournament to watch as the teams coming into the tournament not only have 20 percent of the nations ranked wrestlers. But there is also a ton of former Colorado HS wrestlers in the mix. Adams State have 3 returning All-Americans ready to do battle on the mat for a return trip to the Nationals. Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Mesa both have 5 weights covered by ranked wrestlers. Then, you have the dark horse or upset win by a wrestler to make it to Nationals.
The action starts at 10am at Mountianeer Field House on the Western State campus this Saturday March 1st. Finals are slated to start at 5pm, along with the placement matches.
