One of the biggest shifts in college?

Students are expected to recognize when they need help… and take action on their own.

But many students have never had to do that before.

So when they start struggling, they often:
– wait too long
– hope things improve on their own
– or feel stuck not knowing what to do next

That’s why self-advocacy matters so much.

It’s not just “speaking up.”
It’s recognizing a problem, knowing what support exists, and taking the next step before things spiral.

And for students with ADHD or executive function challenges, that can be especially hard without support and practice.

Freshman year is wrapping up, and for many students (and parents), this year probably looked different than expected.

Maybe there were moments of growth and independence.
Maybe there were hard lessons around time management, motivation, follow-through, burnout, studying, or asking for help.
For many students, it was both.

As the semester comes to a close, reflection can be more helpful than immediately jumping into fixing or planning.

These questions can help open up honest conversations without turning it into a lecture, interrogation, or argument.

Most students are still learning:
• how to manage their time independently
• how to study in ways that actually work
• how to recover from setbacks
• how to build systems and routines for their brain
• how to ask for support before things spiral

Sometimes the biggest growth from freshman year isn’t academic.
It’s self-awareness.

College success isn’t just about getting accepted.
It’s about whether your teen can manage everything that comes after move-in day.

Things like:
⏰ Managing time without constant reminders
📚 Keeping track of assignments and deadlines
🧠 Starting tasks before the last minute
📅 Following through consistently
🙋 Self-advocating when they’re struggling

And most students were never actually taught those skills.

If your teen is smart and capable, but still struggles with organization, procrastination, motivation, or follow-through, this free parent training will help you understand what’s really going on — and what actually helps.

The day before a test matters more than most students think.

Not for cramming everything…
but for setting their brain up to actually perform.

If your student has AP exams or finals coming up, send this to them or save it for later.

Most students aren’t taught how to get started on tasks…

but in college, they’re expected to begin work independently (often without reminders or structure).

And this is where many students get stuck.

They’re not avoiding work because they don’t care.
They’re stuck at the starting point.

Task initiation is the ability to begin—even when something feels overwhelming, boring, or unclear.

This is a skill students can build!

When students learn how to get started, everything changes: less procrastination, more momentum, and less last-minute stress.

If you want to understand the full set of skills that actually support students in college…

During finals, most students don’t choose the wrong tasks on purpose.

Their brain is just doing what brains do best:
🧠 respond to urgency

Deadlines, pressure, something due tomorrow…
that creates just enough activation to get started.

But finals don’t reward urgency.
They reward importance.

And the most important work
(final exams, big projects, cumulative studying)
usually doesn’t feel urgent… until it’s late.

That’s where students get stuck—busy all day, but not moving the needle where it counts.
