ISR of Central Texas

ISR of Central Texas Infant Swimming Resource's Self-Rescue technique is the safest provider of survival swimming lessons for children 6 months to 6 years. The Sooner, The Safer!

Many parents don’t realize the dangers of introducing young children to water
before they have the skills to survive. Before your baby can feel confident to
safely enjoy the water, he or she must first learn the skills needed for survival. ISR is the safest provider of swimming lessons for infants and toddlers
worldwide. With more than 45 years of research and development behind ISR's
Self-Rescue™

program, ISR teaches each child survival skills in conjunction with
basic swimming lessons that give them the competence required to safely enjoy
the water. www.infantswim.com
Complacency happens to even the best parents, and is extremely dangerous…
Every day children in the United States reach the water unsupervised and end
up in potential drowning situations. Every time your baby doesn’t fall into the
water it can reinforce the idea that they can be left alone for “just a second.” The best safeguard is not to rely on your baby’s past behavior, but to equip your baby with critical water survival skills taught by ISR Instructors. Empower your child by enrolling him or her in ISR’s Self-Rescue™ program. See Less

Clothes lessons at the end of lessons prepare your children for this 💚💙

Did you know that 83% of children who drowned were fully clothed at the time of their drowning? Regular clothes can add up to 20 pounds of weight to a child in the water. Has your child been taught to survive a fall into the water fully clothed?

With over 100 emails on my waitlist, and my session filling in minutes this morning, there are a lot of you that didn’t have the opportunity to enroll. I’ve received several emails saying, “I didn’t get in. How do I keep my child safe in the meantime?”. What you do between now and getting your child in ISR can hinder their ISR experience or help it. It can also hinder their safety or keep them as safe as possible while they are unskilled. Below, I’ve listed some things to do to keep them safe. I would also highly encourage you to visit www.infantswim.com to search for more instructors. I may be the closest instructor to you, but I can tell you that equipping your children with these life saving skills is worth the drive. The sooner they are skilled, the safer they are.
HOW TO KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE:
• SUPERVISION - Children can drown in as little as 20 seconds and drowning is silent. Do not allow any room for distractions. Put your phone down. Verbally designate a water watcher. Remove floaties from the pool that they can get trapped under. DO NOT take your eyes off of your child.
• DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN TO GET IN THE WATER WITHOUT YOU - I know, kids want to swim all of the time and many of us parents don’t. Allowing your child to swim without you though sets precedence that this is acceptable at all times. I also highly encourage you to make your child ask for your permission to enter the water regardless of how old they are and even if you are already in the water. This habit will also decrease the possibility of them entering the water without you.
• AVOID PUDDLE JUMPERS AND FLOATATION DEVICES UNLESS YOU ARE AROUND OPEN WATER - Many parents of drowning victims say that putting their child in a puddle jumper is that led to the child’s drowning. Floatation devices around pools gives children a false sense of security. Children can’t differentiate being able to “swim” with a puddle jumper, and not being able to swim without one. They believe that just like with a floatation device, when they jump in the water, they will bob back up to the surface. Floatation devices also put children in the vertical position, also known as the drowning position. Children create muscle memory in this position which is unsustainable without a floatation device. This is why ISR focuses on horizontal muscle memory through floating.
• INSTALL ALARMS ON DOORS AND WINDOWS AND A MESH POOL FENCE THAT LATCHES - Children are curious and unpredictable. Don’t for a second allow yourself to believe that they can’t sneak out of the house or climb the pool fence. In the event your child goes missing, always check the water first.
• ENROLL IN SURVIVAL SWIM LESSONS - All swim lessons are not created equal. If your swim instructor is teaching your child with floaties, putting them in the vertical position, teaching them that water is fun, and not teaching them to float & Self Rescue should they find themselves in water alone, these lessons are hindering your child more than they are helping them.
• LEARN CPR - God forbid something does happen, time is not on your side. Being able to jump into action prior to emergency response’s arriving is critical.

As my wait list fills up, I've had many parents ask me what they can do to keep their children safe in the water while they wait for ISR Lessons. 👏🏼
If you have non-swimmers:
✅ALWAYS practice hands-on supervision in the water. This sends the important message to young children that they should only be in the water with an adult.
🚫NEVER allow them to float or "swim" around in a floatation device in the pool. This teaches independence and confidence in the water without the necessary competence. Floatation devices also reinforce muscle memory for a vertical (drowning) position in the water which a child will revert to if they end up in the water without one on.
😅If the ratio of adults to non-swimmers is too great, choose a safer water option like a splash pad, sprinkler or kiddie pool (be sure to empty after each use) with active supervision. These activities are just as fun and create awesome summer time memories.
💯Remember that a U.S. Coast Guard Approved Life Jacket is required for ALL children on water vessels and should be worn when playing around or in open bodies of water.

Did you know that most drownings occur at non-swim times? It's not happening when we are watching them closely at the pool. It's happening when we have shut pool time down and brought everyone inside to start fixing lunch, only for a little one to get back out to the water undetected 😞

So what does this mean for your child? It means normal everyday clothes, a diaper, shoes, jackets, or hats. These are things that are not part of the normal swim lesson experience, but can make water challenging to navigate if the child meets water unexpectedly.

This is why we give every student the opportunity to practice their skills in their clothes. This is not a test of any kind, rather the chance to experience the water in their everyday attire with a Certified ISR Instructor.

We are happy knowing they are prepared for the unexpected. They are happy because it's pretty silly to swim in your clothes! 😝
