1939 Ford Deluxe Convertible

“ Starting with a 100% stock Washington Blue 1939 Ford Deluxe Convertible, good friend to all, Billy Powell ( ) decided to hand it over to Dave Martinez ( ) in California for some custom touches. Windshield was chopped approximately 3” and Dave built one of his famous Carson Style soft tops. Dave also cleaned up some previous metal work and prepared the rear fenders for the flush 1939 Lincoln Zephyr skirts.

Suspension-wise the stock front axle and spindles were dropped 4” and spring reversed. The rear end is hung via reversed eye spring as well.

Power is delivered via stock rebuilt 221 Flathead with an offenhauser 2x2 intake topped by 2 stromberg 97s and Fenton headers.

Inside, Martinez stitched up Oxblood seats and Door Panels mixed with dark red velvet for the headliner and trim, and dash and interior pieces painted to match.

Other touches include National Flipper caps, 600-16 Firestone whitewalls, and a Columbia 2 Speed Rear end that was sourced and installed by the next owner Blake Burwell ( ).

The best thing- a Bermuda Bell mounted under the floor for dinging your way up the road. “

Thanks Paul for givin’ us the rundown on your fabulous ford. There’s been many of times that I wished my name was on the title. Come October I’m sure I will be dreamin’ again.

Welcome To The Fam !

1932 Ford Roadster

A few of our favorite people from the beautiful PNW is Brian & Val Fluetsch. Great family that have made the long trek to Bartlesville with a few different cars. We were thrilled to hear from Brian that he was making the trek back for Lucky #7, but what would he bring ? Brian started sending over a few pics of a deuce roadster that I hadn’t seen before.

" The car was built from one of the first body and chassis kits So Cal sold around 2006. It has a Tremec TKO Transmission, Curry rear end and a ZZ430 engine ( #267 out of the 430 that GM built). Larry Foss assembled the car and painted it. Holcomb upholstery did the leather two tone interior and it has a Sid Chavers Bop Top. The pin striping was done by Mitch Kim. Rich Staph was the original owner/builder and we basically got the car from him in 2013. We are excited to bring it to the ROC this year !“

Mr Fluetsch we are just as excited to have ya Back !

Builder:

I’ve been thinking about this feature for several weeks now, and for the life of me I can’t verbalize the pure beauty of this car. I’ve come to the conclusion that the Zephyr known as “Slymer” has literally left me speechless.

So I’m going to let the amazing photo work of Michael Christensen () do the talking for me.

Welcome to family !

FAMILY SHOWCASE:

Mike & Debbie Kilen /
1931 Ford Model A Coupe

A few weeks back a buddy and I found ourselves playing what if ? “If I owned this car, this is how I would build it.” We have all done it right ? Paint color, motor options, fenders or not, chopped vs. not, and on and on…

Well after we had verbally designed the next few years of AMBR winners, the topic of Model A Coupes came up. Over the years there has been some great A Coupes but there is one that I keep going back to. Originally owned and built by Mark Ford ( ) this hot rod has the recipe for the ultimate hot rod. DeSoto 330 Hemi, 6x2 intake manifold, 6” Chop, Wilson Welding backing plates mated to Buick drums, ‘36 Ford dash and headlights, and list goes on and on. Long story short, in my opinion Mr Ford built the ultimate A.

The Ford’s now call Australia home but they left their righteous coupe under the care of Mike and Debbie Kilen.

I’m really lookin forward to seeing this bare metal beauty back in NE Oklahoma for !

FAMILY SHOWCASE:

We bought the Bonneville Boomer in 1983 and all it was then was a frame with no cross members, body parts and complete dash that was customized by Doug Rice in the early 50's.

The good thing was that the sheet metal body parts had all been restored, so it was very solid. I spent 2 1/2 years rebuilding the car. While only having a one man body shop for a couple of years. It meant a lot of late nights and weekends to finish the car.

Back in the day the car was chopped 3" in the front and 4-1/2 in the rear with a 42 Ford rear window. It is channeled 5-1/2" and the hood is sectioned the same.

The fenders raised with the rear ones widened 2" to allow for racing slicks. 1940 Doors and dash with custom gauge area with Stewart Warner gauges. Desoto front bumpers on both ends that were obtained from Donn Pinkney then I molded the tail lights in the ribs like it was in the 50's.

In 1952, 1953 and 1954 the Bonneville Boomer was timed on the Salt Flats with its' fasted speed of 126.58 in 1953.

The Bonneville Boomer was also drag raced in Washington State locally and went 104 MPH in 1954. The car ran a 296 inch Merc with 4 carb race setup and used 25% alcohol. Cadillac Lasalle gear box and Halibrand quick change.

In 1985 the car was rebuilt enough to take it to an event with only the seat upholstered. We drove the car to events almost every weekend. In 1989 we drove from Washington to St. Paul, MN to the Street Rod Nationals. We have driven to the salt flats many times.

What is astonishing is we've met people on the Salt at speedweek that were there when the car was there in 1954. Betty Berkland had just been married and she and her husband took photos next to our car while it was there in the 50's. We had a terrific visit with her and loved her memory shares and enthusiasm.

We got to be good friends with Doug and Janet Rice. Doug gave me his Clymer Helmet he bought in 1952. For our wedding gift in 1987 Doug and Janet gave us the Appleton spot lights that were on the car when he built it. We had them chromed and worked them over and they work terrific.

The Bonneville Boomer was featured in Rod & Custom, Hot Rod, Custom Car Annual, The Rodders Journal and many early little pages books.

Kim McCullough / 1932 Ford Roadster

THE PACIFIC GUNSIGHT SPECIAL

The history of this hot road dates back to 1946. A young sailor named
Roy "Mack" Mackinney returned from the war and ran a Union 76 gas station in Palo Alto, California. It was there that he built this highboy roadster for drag racing.

The new highboy, driven by Eldon Lang and Tommy Cheek, was raced at the drag strips of Salinas and Redwood City, California in the late 40s up to 1951.

A divorce forced its sale to Leo Juri who raced it at Bonneville in 1952.
With sponsorship from Juri's employer, the car became known as the Pacific Gun Sight Special. The original Bonneville plaque from 1952 adorns the dash, inscribed with a speed of 124.82 mph.

A complete restoration in the winter of 2021/22, carefully preserved the many original features of the hot rod and returned the Pacific Gun Sight Special to its four-carburetor configuration used at Bonneville complete with the original Edelbrock manifold and a meticulous recreation of its appearance there in 1952.

A fully documented history and known provenance since 1946, shows it never changed looks or character from Mack's original build. The Pacific Gun Sight Special offers an authentic peak at what hot rodding was like in its early years.

Dan Benck /
1937 Lincoln Zephyr

If you follow Mr Benck you have watched many cars come, and many cars go. But I believe he just acquired a car that will stay with him for many years. See Dan has been on the hunt for the correct ‘37 Zephyr for quite some time, and a few months back the patience and hustle paid off.

Since becoming the new owner, Dan has rebuilt the Columbia rear end and gave the Zephyr a little altitude adjustment. Dan has been a great supporter of THE ROC and we are super excited for him to finally land such a beautiful car. See ya in 6 short months my friend.

Second Time’s A Charm ?

Dustin started contacting me about a month before , “ The thrash is on ! “ Every few days I was being updated with pics of truck: chrome running boards, new interior, bedcover, and an engine bay that looked like a 10 ct diamond engagement ring. Everything was goin well until a few nights before the adventure west, they discovered a crack in the block. Not wanting to throw in the towel quite yet, club brother Ben Haag told Dustin to bring over the spare flathead he had in the garage and he would take care of the swap.

Dustin and that little orange ‘41 made it to Bartlesville last year but unfortunately a blown head gasket forced them to miss the day at Woolaroc. Mr Corl has promised me everything has been fixed & 2026 will be a much better year.

Can’t wait to see ya my friend !

THE TIME MERCHANT

The initial plan… a closed cab ‘32 pickup, nothing crazy. Simple paint job, 40’s era styling, but a good driver.

The outcome… 2017 AMBR Contender.

I would assume most of us have done the same: a few more pieces at the chrome shop, shinier paint, and a lot more horsepower than first intended. But not to this level. With design help from Eric Black, , the team at Jonathan Goolsby was able to build this hot rod with styling and craftsmanship that Matthew was after.

Im a huge fan of a well executed RPU & and this one is about as good as it gets.

Jeff Mckelvey /
1932 Ford Truck

You could say I’ve thumbed through Hop Up Magazine Annual No. 18 a few times in the last year, and every time I get to Chapter 12 I pay really close attention. See that is where you will find the write up & glamour shots of Jeff’s chopped and channeled, Chevy mist green, Ford truck. The stance, color, interior, engine bay, it’s all so good. So when I received a message from Jeff saying that he’s ready to join the fun, all he received was a one word answer… YES !

I asked Mr Mckelvey to give me a little rundown of his 50’s inspired hot rod:

“ My brother found this truck in a field as a rusted out, channeled, olds powered, hot rod about 25 years ago. It sat in our father’s yard for years until I decided to get it back on the road. I gave it to Andy Kohler ( ) in Williamsport PA to build. The plan was to build a clean driveable hot rod. Brandon Glymph from Delaware knocked out the body work/paint and Mikey ( ) from New Jersey tied everything together with a clean interior. “

Honored to have ya part of the family Jeff, see ya in October !
