Hoka Challenger ATR
"The Clifton" on Steroids!!
COMPETITOR MAGAZINE "BEST OF" 2015
The light-weight, smooth-riding characteristics of the Clifton have been complimented in the CHALLENGER ATR by a more aggressive outsole and increased support in the upper to create an all-terrain shoe for varied surfaces. Early-Stage Meta-Rocker geometry provides a fluid, efficient ride, and independent rubber pods provide stability on uneven terrain for the runner who values versatility in their running shoe.

I'm personally having a ton of fun in this shoe. A little firmer than the Clifton which I like. The shoe has the same aggressive feeling on the road as it does on the trail and by trail I mean single track.

Look for gear from Hoka, Ultra, Swiftwick, Orange Mud & more....
First up....
Orange Mud
The Hydraquiver 2 rides high on the back between the shoulder blades with two full bottles, it can feel a bit top-heavy but for those who don't like things on their hips and the fuss that goes along with refilling a bladder It can be a perfect fit!
It has 2 large, stretchy front pockets that can hold snacks and small pieces of gear, or additional water flasks if needed, and a bungee on back lets you secure your empties or a light rain jacket.
It is also made from surgical grade material that resists odors.

For all of us - injuries are a serious factor that hinders our development whether we are an athletes or simply the everyday person who wants to lead a healthy active lifestyle.

The problem is with all these new “Extreme” movement workout programs, the high intensity practices/workouts and our busy lifestyles the athlete and the average person are simply not prepared to handle their exercise program and the end result for some is injury.

Here are 2 simple rules for exercise that can help to reduce the chance of injury.

1 - Develop a Go-To 4 Minute Warm-Up:

Warming up may seem like an extra step, but it’s the single most important step to help prepare your muscles & joints for the activity that you are preparing to do. Full body movements such as jumping jacks, caterpillars, lunges, walking with arm swings, skipping and karaoke’s are great ways to prepare the entire body for the activity that lies ahead. Create your own warm up and make it an everyday part of your workout.

2 – The Difference Between Soreness & Pain

If you feel a bit of soreness in your muscles after a workout that’s okay. It simply means you pushed yourself through your workout. My golden rule is “Effort=Outcome and if your putting forth the effort there may be some residual soreness from your workout. Don’t let that soreness stop you from continuing to workout. Doing nothing allows the soreness to set in. Movement helps “flush” that soreness away.

However, if you feel sharp, piercing pain during any movement in your workout - you should avoid that movement and possibly see a doctor. Working through pain is never healthy and can lead to a more long term injury.

Similarly, don’t let soreness or pain stop you from exercising altogether. The body heals itself quicker through movement rather than a sedentary state.
What I mean by that is if you have knee pain; don’t do high impact exercises that put stress on the knee’s. Try swimming, riding a bike or a rowing machine. If you have shoulder pain from doing things overhead try pushups or stabilization exercises like planks to help keep up your strength.

Simply put try working around the pain to help keep you active.

A simple looking piece of rope.
Yet such a body transforming tool....
THE JUMP ROPE
A simple but challenging movement and here are 3 great reasons why it should be a staple for runners, triathletes or any athlete.. It has many functions from dynamic warm up to a great way to finish a run.
1. Jumping Rope builds a Great backside.
Jumping rope fires up the whole backside of your legs.
From your calves to your hamstrings and your glutes.
Calves specifically. And this is an area that most folks have a hard time sculpting with bodyweight exercises alone.
The rhythmic jumping in an almost stiff legged position assures your calves are getting a heck of a pump. And the volume of work they need to shape up.
2. Jumping Rope gives you a great metabolic hit.
It’s a great way to get your heart rate up in a hurry.
And a phenomenal exercise to use for high intensity interval circuits. Tabatas especially.
The results is a nice spike to your fat burning metabolism.
One that continues long after your workout has finished!
3. Jumping Rope is super good for your brain because jumping rope is a very dynamic exercise.
It requires coordination, footwork and balance. And if you don’t have those things, jumping rope will help build them!
Your upper and lower body must work together … even though they’re doing different things. It’s one of the reasons martial artists and boxers LOVE to incorporate jumping rope into their training.
Working on coordination, footwork and balance are very mindful activities. They require your brain to make new connections. And this will help keep you feeling and thinking SHARP … on top of looking Great!!
