In the early 1970's, Nautilus equipment came to market and revolutionized the way people exercise. At the time, people believed they needed to perform 3 distinct different types of exercise for full-body fitness and health. These were, strength training for muscle strength and conditioning, aerobic exercise for cardiovascular health and fitness, and stretching for joint and muscle flexibility enhancement. People would literally spend multiple hours each week performing all this exercise.
However, the Nautilus company, and it's founder Arthur Jones, said the conventional mindset and approach was both unnecessary and inefficient. Nautilus promoted their belief that strength training correctly would simultaneously produce muscle strength and conditioning, cardiovascular fitness and health, and flexibility all from the same program and eliminate the need to perform three separate types of exercise.
Today, scientific research has repeatedly demonstrated that Nautilus' claims were in fact correct. The research shows strength training not only produces muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness and health, and flexibility, many studies indicate strength training produces cardiovascular fitness and health and flexibility more effectively than aerobic exercise and stretching programs.
This is great news for busy, time-pressured individuals! You can achieve well-rounded full-body health and fitness from a single exercise program -- strength training!
(1) Background: Stretching is known to improve range of motion (ROM), and evidence has suggested that strength training (ST) is effective too. However, it is unclear whether its efficacy is comparable to stretching. The goal was to systematically review and meta-analyze randomized controlled trials....
