Try-It Days
The Recreation Administration and Leadership class (RECM 350) and the Appalachian Wilderness Club will be sponsoring UC Outdoors Try-It Days, with opportunities for the Union community to learn about and experience outdoor recreation activities, from now until the end of the semester.

We’re going to start small, with a workshop on using ropes and knots for outdoor recreation, on Wednesday, April 5, at 2 p.m. We’ll meet at the picnic shelter closest to the dock at the campus Brickyard Pond (yes, the one erroneously referred to as “Lakeside Pond”). Have a look at the description below, and then reply to this email if you have questions or would like to make a reservation.

Know Not No Knot!

Spring Break Backpacking

Do you enjoy camping and hiking? Then backpacking may be for you. If you have some prior experience and want to challenge yourself, think about spending four days of your spring break on the Pine Mountain State Scenic Trail. We will be on the trail from 3/3-6/2018. The PMSST is just a small part of the Great Eastern Trail (GET). The GET is America's newest long distance hiking trail, stretching from Alabama to New York through 9 states and with 1,800 miles of footpaths. We are lucky enough to have 42 miles of ridge trail completed in Kentucky. The trip will start from Breaks Interstate Park and end at US 119 near Whitesburg. It is designated as two sections, for a total of 42 miles. When traveling from North to South...

You will need to have most of your own gear for this trip but no worries if you need to borrow a few things from the Wilderness Club to complete your gear list. The cutoff date for going on this trip is 2/23/18.

1. Birch K**b - This section begins at the Russell Fork trailhead in the Breaks Park and follows the Pine Mountain ridgeline 13 miles to Birch K**b, the highest point on this section of trail. Water and camping are available here with an overnight camp shelter completed in December of 2012. And continuing southwest for 13 miles is the trailhead at US 23 at Pound Gap.

2. Highland - This section begins at US 23 and trails 7 miles to the Adena Springs Shelter and then continues 8 more miles to the Flamingo Shelter. The Highland section is 15 miles in length ending at US 119.

Our mileage breakdown looks like this:
• day one 10
• day two 10
• day three 10
• day four 12

SRT Climbing Contest this Thursday

The Union College RECM 235 class and the Appalachian Wilderness Club will sponsor a single-rope-technique climbing contest this Thursday from 1-3 p.m. at the Lakeside athletic office building. No experience required. We’ll provide instruction and gear, plus refreshments and prizes. This will be a thirty-meter climb on a rope treadmill. Competitive classes will include men’s and women’s 30-meter sit-stand. We may also offer a demonstration-only open category, in which experienced climbers can elect to use either a non-mechanical system or a rope walker system. The climbing contest is open to all Union students, faculty, and staff. All climbs will take place in the area behind the ornamental wall just to the right of the front door of the office building.

Also, local caving club the Pine Mountain Grotto will hold its monthly meeting this Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Heritage Conference Room of the student center. All members of the college community are invited.
