It's Wildlife Wednesday! I've been up in the Arctic circle in Alaska, and still finding birds that we see at Valle Crucis. Common Ravens are incredibly widespread, and we are actually near the southern tip of their range in eastern North America. They are incredibly smart, and scientists have determined that a raven is as intelligent as a 6 year old human

It’s Wildlife Wednesday! With warmer weather, we are coming into turtle crossing season on our roads. If you see a turtle crossing in front of you (and you can safely pull off the road), always help the turtle across in the direction it’s heading. It has a good reason to be going that way! If you come across a snapping turtle like this one, it might be best to use a stick to help it across. They have a powerful bite and a long neck. Never try to pick a snapping turtle up by the tail, you can cause serious harm to the turtles spine if you do that.

Out with the old, in with the new (fence)!

A huge thank you to Thad and his amazing helpers for rebuilding a section of split rail fencing at Valle Crucis Community Park as part of his Eagle Scout Project!!

Their hard work and dedication today was the first step in replacing an important part of the park that was lost during Hurricane Helene. We are so grateful for the time and effort that has already gone into this project and proud to have supporters like Thad giving back in a meaningful way.

Thank you Thad for choosing Valle Crucis Community Park for your Eagle Scout Project!

It’s Wildlife Thursday! I apologize for being a day late. I’m up in Northern Ohio leading tours for the Biggest Week in American Birding festival. Tens of thousands of birders swarm northern Ohio to see the beautiful warblers that stop here before crossing Lake Erie into Canada. The funny thing is most of the warblers up here can be found nesting within an hour or two drive from Valle Crucis Park. Keep an eye out in our mountains for some of these beautiful birds!

It’s Wildlife Wednesday! Since we have finally gotten a little bit of rain, keep an eye out for Red Efts wandering about the forest floor, and sometimes crossing roads. Efts are the juvenile stage of a Newt. They are funny salamanders who do their life cycle a bit backwards from most others. Eggs are laid in the water, but after hatching, the young quickly crawl onto land and spend years as the bright orange little guys you might come across on forest hills and trails. They are highly poisonous, so please don’t lick them! They will eventually return to the water and become aquatic for their adult years.
