For this week’s Wildlife Wednesday meet the stream detectives! These macroinvertebrates include mayfly larvae, caddisfly larvae and dragonfly larvae!

These detectives live under/on rocks and among leaves of streams and can tell us a lot about water quality and stream health. Some species are especially sensitive to pollution, making them important indicators for scientists and community scientists alike!

Join us on Sunday, Sept 13 at 11:00-2:00 for a macroinvertebrate BioBlitz! We will carefully be searching and exploring the stream for these cool critters!

It’s Wildlife Wednesday everyone!
Today we introduce the monkey slug caterpillar!

Found throughout western North Carolina, these unusual caterpillars are masters of camouflage. Their strange, lumpy appearance helps them blend in with leaves, bark, and other forest debris.

Despite their spooky look, they’re an important part of the ecosystem! They feed on a variety of deciduous trees and shrubs and replenish important nutrient cycles in the forest. They eventually transform into a beautiful hag moth!

Note: Do not handle the monkey slug caterpillars as their stinging hairs can cause skin irritation. Admire through observation!

A huge shout out and thank you to the Wall Family for all their hard work to help bring GaGa Ball to Valle Crucis Community Park!!

What is GaGa Ball?
Often referred to as the /nicer/ version of dodgeball, GaGa Ball is a fast-paced, high energy sport played in an octagonal pit. Players need to keep moving to avoid getting hit (below the knees) by the ball. Fun and easy, everyone gets a serious workout!

How to Play:
-Throw a bunch of players (of similar ages) and a ball into the pit
-If the ball touches you below the knees, you’re out!
-Last one in the pit wins!

Happy Wildlife Wednesday everyone! At Valle Crucis Community Park, we take a LICHEN to our visitors!

Lichen is a unique partnership between a fungus and a photosynthetic organism, usually an alga or cyanobacterium.

Have you ever spotted what looks like tiny red-tipped flowers growing on a tree or rock? You may have found British Soldier Lichen! It’s bright red fruiting structures make it one of the easiest lichens to recognize.

These are not just beautiful—they can also be an indicator of healthy, clean air!

Next time you’re exploring the park, slow down and look closely. There’s a whole microscopic world growing right beneath our feet (and on the trees)!
