Island Fitness

Island Fitness Bringing Strength, Flexibility, and Balance to our community. We like to say that Island Fitness is your club in the heart of Bainbridge Island.

Island Fitness was built on the cornerstone that exercise is the one true elixir of life and the only scientifically proven method to reverse certain aspects of aging. Just as exercise science is always developing, we are constantly bringing in and developing new programs to motivate our members, keeping them interested and keeping the pathways to success varied and full of choices. Founded in 200

2 by Alexa and Michael Rosenthal, Island Fitness has continued to grow, expanding our facilities, updating our equipment and providing educational support for our employees. We’re in the heart of Bainbridge Island in the downtown core of Winslow, and in the heart of Bainbridge Island as evidenced by being voted “The Best Place to Work Out” by a reader poll in the Bainbridge Review.

🍂 Fall is coming—and your health deserves a place on the schedule, too!

This week at Island Fitness, we’re sharing simple ways to keep moving, build confidence, and take care of your body as routines start getting busier.

🦴 NEW: Dodgy Bones 101 with Mikki Townshend, PT, DPT
Have you been diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis? Join Mikki for a hands-on workshop focused on understanding low bone mass and learning how to move safely and confidently.

📅 Choose from September 30 OR October 7
⏰ 4:45–5:45 PM
💲 $25 + tax
👥 Limited to 15 participants per workshop

Come prepared to move! Mikki will guide participants through practical, safe movement strategies you can take beyond the workshop and into everyday life. 🦴💪
🌟 New to fitness? There’s a place for you here.
We’re also highlighting our beginner-friendly Small Group Training classes, including Wind-Down Pilates Reformer, StrongHER, Kettlebell Form & Function, and Kettlebell/TRX Mix. Smaller groups mean an opportunity for more instruction as you learn and build confidence.

🍎 Short on time? Try an Exercise Snack!

You don’t always need a full workout. This week we’re sharing short 2–5 minute movement breaks you can fit into a busy day, along with simple snack pairings to help keep you fueled. One example: chair squats, countertop push-ups and standing calf raises, paired with a hard-boiled egg and piece of fruit.

📲 Plus: Don’t forget the Island Fitness Bainbridge app can help you view the schedule, book classes and services, receive reminders, manage payments, and even book a guest into a class.

👟 Are you wearing the right shoes for your workout?

Not all athletic shoes are designed to do the same job—and the shoes you love for running may not be the best choice for lifting weights.

Here’s a quick guide 👇

🏋️ Weightlifting Shoes
A firm, stable sole gives you a solid base for lifting, while an elevated heel can help with positioning and allow some people to squat deeper with a more upright torso. Great for squats and Olympic-style lifting.

💪 Flat Training Shoes
Less cushioning + a stable base makes these a great choice for general strength training, deadlifts, kettlebells and resistance exercises. When you’re producing force against the floor, you generally don’t want to be standing on a thick, squishy surface.

🏃 Running Shoes
Designed for repetitive forward movement and impact absorption. That cushioning is great for walking and running, but may feel less stable when lifting heavier weights.

⚡ Cross-Training Shoes
A versatile middle ground! These typically combine stability with enough cushioning and flexibility for group fitness, circuits, strength work and workouts that involve multiple types of movement.

✨ The takeaway: There isn’t one “best” gym shoe. Choose your footwear based on the activity you’re doing, your individual needs, and—of course—comfort.
The right foundation can make a difference. 👟

What shoes are you wearing for your workouts? Tell us below! 👇

How well does your neck move? 👀

Cervical rotation—your ability to comfortably turn your head from side to side—is an important part of everyday movement. We rely on it when checking our surroundings, driving, exercising, and simply moving through daily life.

As part of our Ortho-Kinetics® Fitness Assessment, we evaluate cervical rotation to identify limitations or asymmetries that may be affecting the way your body moves as a whole.

Small restrictions can tell us a lot. 🔍 Understanding how you move gives us a better starting point for helping you move well.
