U.S. Coast Guard Sector Detroit received a report of an overdue vessel in Saginaw Bay, MI, around 9:40 pm Tuesday.

The vessel departed Gambill’s Landing and was reported to be going fishing in the vicinity of "Black Hole" off Pinconning, MI, Tuesday afternoon with 3 adult males on board, but never returned. The missing mariners are Chris Whitmer, Ron Whitmer, and Chris (Stanley) Whitmer, Sr.

The Coast Guard and local officials are searching for the vessel and its occupants.

Holy moly she was cold this morning!! But the water temp held and the fatties were hungry. My crew made quick work of a heavy limit this morning. I love it when the fish are yanking the rod out of your hand on the up stroke.

First trip of the season was a quick limit. The water is starting to clear up nicely, with temps anywhere from 37 to 40.9 degrees. Temp didn’t seem to mater for us today. They wanted dark colored paddle tails and brown worms when we got over top of them. We still got some weekday availability this month either mornings or afternoons.

We have openings for two people fully guided on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday due to a cancellation. There is some really nice fish starting to show up in the system. This week we pulled quite a few fish between 25 and 27 inches.

I have to say the first group of the 2026 ice season set the bar pretty high today. They smoked em in short order with a nice pile of jumbo perch to boot. My phone rang off the hook today with follow out inquiries and I’ll make my decision Sunday night. As of right now, I don’t really feel comfortable taking people out there and letting them run all over the lake. There is a lot of open water holes yet and a lot of thin ice. I hate to say it, but there’s gonna be trauma this weekend with everybody itching to go ice fishing. . Don’t just run out there in the dark, and don’t just jump a trail and go for it. I seen a couple trails today that stopped right at the thin ice and turned around. If you jump a trail in the dark, you’re gonna drive right over it It’s a lot better when everybody can have a good time and come home safe. We still have a few dates open in February, availability depends on size of Group.

The 2025/26 ice fishing season is just about upon us. The phone is ringing and we are now booking for February on Saginaw Bay. A lot of people in these groups are asking about guided ice fishing already, so I’m throwing this out here a little bit earlier than usual. The weather is shaping up and looking promising for a good ice fishing season. If anybody is interested in a guided Walleye trip on Saginaw Bay, give us a call. We will be booking January but we won’t book that until it gets closer just to kind of get a feel for what our weather is doing.
