On Saturday, 6/15, our next trip with the San Gabriel Mountains Trail Builders will be to clear brush, remove fallen trees and fix tread on the Windy Gap and Big Cienega Trails. Hike will be about 7 miles round trip with 1500' gain. We will be repairing storm damaged trails in the Crystal Lake area. Meet 8:00 am at the Gateway Center in Azusa located on Hwy. 39 just north of town. Look for the wide turnout by the water tanks. We will stop at Rincon Station to pick up tools then proceed up to the trailhead. Expect to return back to Azusa by around 5 pm.

On all trips, please bring a daypack with plenty of water, food and other necessary items. You need to have long sleeves and pants (no shorts), good hiking shoes. We can provide gloves, eye protection and hard hats. For safety you might prefer to bring your own. We will provide tools although you can bring your own if desired.

Please let me know if you plan to attend so that I can bring the appropriate equipment. Rain will cancel.

If you have any questions about your ability to do these trips, please let me know.

Alan

SR-2 remains closed from north of Mt. Wilson Red Box Rd. to south of Upper Big Tujunga Cyn Rd. & from Islip Saddle to Vincent Gulch

Big Dalton Canyon Trail is also closed this weekend, presumably the water, mud, and rock coming down is something of a hazard

Windy Gap Trail has a number of dead trees down across the trail, yet only one of them is a major obstruction which will need a saw crew to remove, once COVID restrictions are lifted.

Well, it's been over a year since formal work was done on the trail, with vaccinations opening up for everyone, hopefully the USFS will permit volunteer crews to resume work, then we can see what a years-worth of erosion and wind has done to the trail.
