I spent the weekend out in Olney, Texas supporting the annual dove hunt hosted by Hunting with Soldiers. It was a great event with fellowship, stories, food, and live music. The birds were flying better than past years, and two hunters got a limit while hunting a stock tank on the evening hunt (note to self…).
We all packed up and said our goodbyes. So me and Remy headed to my regular hunting spot just South of the Veteran’s hunt. We set up camp and waited until it was time for the evening hunt. I put out dove spinners and decoys, then about 6pm the action started. We had White Winged dove dive bombing us sometimes 10 in a flight. I dropped about 8 and my buddy dropped a few more. Remy and Dovie (Remy’s mom and my buddy’s dog) retrieved them all.
Later that night/early morning I made the stalk on two hogs. I put one out of its’ misery. Later I shot at another sounder about 225 yards away. I think I hit one. Will have to watch for buzzards.
Fast forward to Monday…. I worked on broken deer feeders around camp while Remy slept in the 4 Runner with a/c running. We then went on a solo evening hunt at the same stock tank. Same action! Remy found all 13 birds I knocked down. It’s great to see him sit there watching, marking, and retrieving those birds.
I believe my new EcoFlow Wave 3 portable a/c unit saved the trip. We slept comfortably in the tent every night. The new BougeRV ac/dc cooler worked great too!
All told it was a fantastic weekend. Time spent with old friends, making new friends, and time alone with God in the great outdoors.
Top bird is a mourning dove. Bottom bird is a White Winged dove (shown for size comparison).
Take care,
