A mat Pilates class is a low-impact workout done mainly on a floor mat, using your body weight and controlled movements rather than machines. Saying that sometimes I bring along different apparatus like the ball in the photo. Always a challenge in every class.
Here is a 6️⃣step guide. Typically, a 45–60 minute class includes:
1️⃣Warm-up: breathing, gentle spinal movements and mobilisation with some balance work. Body alignment movements.
2️⃣Core work: exercises targeting your deep abdominals, often including variations of leg lifts, abdominal curls and controlled movements.
3️⃣Glutes and legs: bridges, leg circles, side-lying exercises and similar movements.
4️⃣Back and posture: exercises to strengthen the muscles around your spine and improve alignment.
5️⃣Full-body sequences: movements that combine core stability with arms and legs.
6️⃣Stretch/cool-down: gentle stretches and breathing to finish.
The emphasis is generally on slow, precise movements, posture, breathing and control, rather than getting your heart rate very high. You may be surprised by how challenging it feels—particularly in your abs and glutes—even though the movements look quite gentle.
What to expect as a beginner: you don’t need to be flexible or particularly fit. I will give easier and harder variations, and it’s normal to find some exercises surprisingly difficult at first. Bring along your mat and let’s get to work. DM if you want more info ℹ️
