Something to think about as an AAU parent heading into tryout season!

As I’ve been looking through Facebook lately, I’ve noticed a trend. AAU tryouts seem to be getting earlier every year. Not long ago, most tryouts took place in late January. Now, many programs are holding them in late August.

As you head into tryout season, here are a few questions worth asking:

* If your child played on the team last year, why do they need to try out again? Shouldn’t the coaching staff already know what they bring to the team?
* Should tryouts be primarily for evaluating new players rather than players who have already been in the program?
* Why is there a fee just to attend tryouts?
* Why are families often asked to commit with a deposit within 24–48 hours, sometimes before they’ve had a chance to explore other opportunities?

Every program operates differently, and there are valid reasons some clubs choose this process. The important thing is to make sure you’re joining a program that aligns with your family’s values and puts player development ahead of pressure and urgency.

Take your time, ask questions, and make the decision that’s best for your child—not just the one that’s made first.
