šŸŽÆ BC Tactical – Fi***rm Fundamentals #49

šŸ” CONSISTENCY BUILDS SKILL

You don’t need 300 rounds.

You don’t need to spend three hours at the range.

And you definitely don’t need to leave every range session exhausted with an empty ammo can. šŸ˜‚

What you need is consistent, purposeful practice.

šŸŽÆ 20 GOOD ROUNDS CAN TEACH YOU SOMETHING

If you’re working on trigger control, maybe today’s goal is simply:

šŸ”¹ 5 rounds — slow, deliberate group
šŸ”¹ Evaluate
šŸ”¹ 5 rounds — make ONE correction
šŸ”¹ Evaluate again
šŸ”¹ Repeat

That’s training.

Dumping magazine after magazine into a target without knowing what you’re working on?

That’s shooting.

And there’s nothing wrong with shooting just because it’s fun!

But shooting and training aren’t always the same thing.

🧠 YOUR BRAIN NEEDS REPETITION

The fundamentals we’ve covered throughout this series—

Grip.

Stance.

Sight alignment.

Sight picture.

Trigger press.

Follow-through.

Reloads.

Malfunction clearing.

Presentation.

—don’t become automatic because you understood them once.

They become more consistent because you’ve practiced them correctly over and over again.

šŸ  AND NOT EVERY REP REQUIRES AM******ON

With a properly unloaded fi***rm in a safe dry-practice environment, you can work on things like:

šŸ”¹ Grip
šŸ”¹ Presentation
šŸ”¹ Sight acquisition
šŸ”¹ Trigger control
šŸ”¹ Reload mechanics

Even a few focused minutes can reinforce good habits.

Quality repetitions matter.

šŸŽÆ BC TACTICAL TIP

Don’t measure a training session by how much am******on you fired.

Measure it by whether you accomplished what you came there to practice.

10 purposeful minutes regularly can be more valuable than one giant practice session every few months.

Consistency builds familiarity.

Familiarity builds confidence.

And correct repetition builds skill.

šŸ’¬ YOUR TURN:

How often do you actually practice between range trips?

šŸ  Dry practice
šŸŽÆ Range only
šŸ”« A little of both
😬 ā€œPractice? I just show up and hope for the best.ā€ šŸ˜‚

šŸŽÆ BC Tactical –
Fi***rm Fundamentals #48

šŸ”« EVERY SHOT IS A NEW SHOT

You break the shot.

You look at the target.

😬 ā€œWell… THAT wasn’t where I wanted it.ā€

And then what happens?

You try to fix it with the next shot.

That’s when things usually get worse.

šŸŽÆ DON’T CORRECT THE LAST BULLET

That bullet is already downrange.

You can’t bring it back.

And you can’t erase a low-left hit by intentionally pushing the next shot high-right.

Instead, reset your fundamentals:

šŸ”¹ Re-establish your grip
šŸ”¹ Settle your sights
šŸ”¹ Breathe
šŸ”¹ Prep the trigger
šŸ”¹ Make a clean trigger press
šŸ”¹ Follow through

Then do it again.

Every shot gets its own fundamentals.

🧠 DON’T LET ONE SHOT GET IN YOUR HEAD

This is especially important when you’re shooting a qualification, competition, drill or even just trying to shoot a good group.

One bad shot can turn into:

ā€œDang it.ā€

Then…

ā€œI need to make up for that.ā€

Then…

ā€œWhy am I suddenly shooting like crap?ā€ šŸ˜‚

Your mechanics haven’t necessarily disappeared.

Your attention has shifted from executing the next shot to worrying about the last one.

šŸŽÆ SHOOT THE PROCESS — NOT THE SCORE

Good shooting is repeatability.

Grip.

Sights.

Trigger.

Follow-through.

Reset.

Repeat.

If you execute the process consistently, the target will tell you the result.

šŸŽÆ BC TACTICAL TIP

When a shot doesn’t go where you expected, don’t immediately change something.

Remember FF41:

CHANGE ONE THING AT A TIME.

First ask yourself:

šŸ‘‰ What did I SEE when the shot broke?
šŸ‘‰ What did I FEEL?
šŸ‘‰ Did I call that shot?

Then reset and shoot the next round correctly.

Don’t chase the hole.

You’ve already fired that shot.

Your job now is to make the next one count.

šŸ’¬ YOUR TURN:

Be honest…

Has one bad shot ever gotten in your head and completely wrecked the rest of your group? šŸ˜‚

šŸŽÆ BC Tactical –
Fi***rm Fundamentals #47

šŸ‘ļø YOU CAN’T FOCUS ON EVERYTHING AT ONCE

Rear sight.
Front sight.
Target.

They’re all at different distances from your eye.

So here’s the problem:

šŸ‘ļø Your eye can’t keep all three perfectly focused at the same time.

And that’s completely normal.

šŸ”« WITH TRADITIONAL IRON SIGHTS

For traditional precision shooting fundamentals, your visual focus is generally on the:

FRONT SIGHT

That means:

šŸ”¹ Rear sight — slightly blurred
šŸ”¹ Front sight — sharpest
šŸ”¹ Target — slightly blurred

Why?

Because small errors in sight alignment can create increasingly larger errors downrange.

You need to be able to see that front sight clearly enough to maintain its relationship with the rear sight while you press the trigger.

šŸ”“ BUT WHAT ABOUT A RED DOT?

Different system. Different visual strategy.

With a red-dot optic, we generally teach:

šŸŽÆ TARGET FOCUS

Keep your vision on the target and allow the dot to appear in your field of view.

Don’t shift your focus back to the optic.

Don’t stare at the dot.

And definitely don’t try to make that dot perfectly motionless.

Remember FF39?

That dot is going to move.

Accept the movement and make a good trigger press.

āš ļø AND CONTEXT MATTERS

Precision shooting at distance isn’t the same visual problem as defensive shooting at close range.

Your sights, distance, lighting, vision and the type of shooting you’re doing can all affect how you use your eyes.

The important part is understanding what you’re trying to see and WHY.

šŸŽÆ BC TACTICAL TIP

Think of it this way:

šŸ”« IRON SIGHTS: Front sight gets the visual priority.

šŸ”“ RED DOT: Target gets the visual priority.

Your eyes are part of your shooting system.

Train them just like you train your grip and trigger press.

šŸ’¬ YOUR TURN:

What are you shooting most often?

šŸ”« Iron sights
šŸ”“ Red dot
šŸ‘€ Both

And if you’ve switched from irons to a dot—what was the hardest habit to break?

šŸŽÆ BC Tactical –
Fi***rm Fundamentals #46

šŸ‘ļø SIGHT ALIGNMENT vs. SIGHT PICTURE

They’re NOT the same thing!

These two terms get mixed up all the time, so let’s make them simple.

šŸ”« SIGHT ALIGNMENT

Sight alignment is the relationship between your FRONT and REAR sights.

With traditional iron sights, you’re generally looking for:

ā¬†ļø The top of the front sight level with the top of the rear sight.

ā†”ļø Equal space on both sides of the front sight.

Think:

EQUAL HEIGHT • EQUAL LIGHT

That’s sight alignment.

šŸŽÆ SIGHT PICTURE

Now take that properly aligned set of sights and place it where you want the shot to impact on the target.

THAT is your sight picture.

So:

šŸ‘ļø Eye

ā¬‡ļø

šŸ”² Rear Sight

ā¬‡ļø

ā¬†ļø Front Sight

ā¬‡ļø

šŸŽÆ Target

Your sight alignment is happening within the fi***rm’s sights.

Your sight picture is the relationship between those aligned sights and the target.

šŸ‘€ WHAT SHOULD BE IN FOCUS?

With traditional iron-sight shooting, you’ll often be taught:

FRONT SIGHT SHARP. TARGET SLIGHTLY BLURRED.

Your eyes physically cannot keep the rear sight, front sight, and target perfectly focused at three different distances simultaneously.

And yes—red dots change this conversation.

With a red-dot optic, we generally want the shooter target focused while allowing the dot to appear over the intended aiming area.

We’ll save that one for another FF. šŸ˜‰

šŸŽÆ BC TACTICAL TIP

Remember it this way:

ALIGNMENT = SIGHTS TO SIGHTS

PICTURE = SIGHTS TO TARGET

You need consistent sight alignment AND an appropriate sight picture to put rounds where you intend them to go.

šŸ’¬ YOUR TURN:

Before you started shooting, did someone actually explain the difference between sight alignment and sight picture to you—or did they just tell you to ā€œline up the sightsā€? šŸ˜‚

šŸŽÆ BC Tactical – Fi***rm Fundamentals #45šŸ‘ļø WHICH EYE IS REALLY DOING THE AIMING?You’re right-handed, so you’re right-ey...
08/31/2026

šŸŽÆ BC Tactical –
Fi***rm Fundamentals #45

šŸ‘ļø WHICH EYE IS REALLY DOING THE AIMING?

You’re right-handed, so you’re right-eye dominant… right?

Not necessarily!

Most people have a dominant eye—the eye their brain naturally relies on more when aligning an object with a target.

Sometimes your dominant eye and dominant hand don’t match.

That’s called cross-dominance.

šŸ‘ļø FIND YOUR DOMINANT EYE

Here’s the simple test I use with my students:

1ļøāƒ£ Pick a small object across the room.

2ļøāƒ£ With both eyes open, make a small triangle with your hands and center the object inside the triangle.

3ļøāƒ£ Don’t move your hands or your head.

4ļøāƒ£ Close one eye.

šŸ‘‰ Did the object stay inside your triangle or disappear/move out of view?

5ļøāƒ£ Open that eye and close the other one.

šŸ‘‰ Check again.

The eye that keeps the object centered in your triangle is your dominant eye.

That’s it. No moving your hands toward your face. Just OPEN → CLOSE → COMPARE.

šŸŽÆ WHY DOES EYE DOMINANCE MATTER?

It can affect:

šŸ”¹ Sight alignment
šŸ”¹ Head position
šŸ”¹ How naturally you acquire your sights
šŸ”¹ How you present the fi***rm
šŸ”¹ Why someone may struggle with their sight picture even when other fundamentals look good

šŸ¤” WHAT IF YOU’RE CROSS-DOMINANT?

Don’t assume something is wrong!

A right-handed shooter can absolutely be left-eye dominant, and vice versa.

There are different ways an instructor can work with cross-dominance depending on the shooter, fi***rm, and type of shooting.

The goal is to find a safe, comfortable and repeatable technique that works for YOU.

šŸŽÆ BC TACTICAL TIP

Dominant hand does NOT automatically equal dominant eye.

If you’re struggling with a consistent sight picture, eye dominance is one of the first things worth checking.

And now you know how to test it. šŸ‘ļø

šŸ’¬ TRY IT RIGHT NOW!

Make your triangle, pick an object and check both eyes.

Then tell me in the comments:

āž”ļø Right hand / Right eye
ā¬…ļø Left hand / Left eye
ā†”ļø Cross-dominant

Let’s see how many cross-dominant shooters we have following BC Tactical!

šŸŽÆ BC Tactical – Fi***rm Fundamentals #44šŸ’„ CLICK… BUT NO BANG: MISFIRE OR HANGFIRE?You press the trigger expecting BANG…...
08/29/2026

šŸŽÆ BC Tactical –
Fi***rm Fundamentals #44

šŸ’„ CLICK… BUT NO BANG: MISFIRE OR HANGFIRE?

You press the trigger expecting BANG…

Instead, you get CLICK.

Your first instinct might be to immediately look at the fi***rm or start clearing it.

Don’t be in a hurry. Keep that muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

Why? Because a round that doesn’t fire immediately isn’t always completely dead.

šŸ”“ MISFIRE

A misfire occurs when the primer is struck but the cartridge fails to fire.

Possible causes can include:

šŸ”¹ Defective or damaged primer
šŸ”¹ Contaminated or compromised am******on
šŸ”¹ A light primer strike
šŸ”¹ A fi***rm-related ignition problem

The important thing to remember is that you don’t immediately know why it didn’t fire.

🟔 HANGFIRE

A hangfire is different.

The primer is struck, but there’s an unexpected delay between pulling the trigger and the cartridge actually firing.

It might be a very short delay—but that’s exactly why you shouldn’t immediately turn the fi***rm, look down at it, or open the action after a click.

šŸ›‘ WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

If you pull the trigger and the fi***rm doesn’t fire:

āž”ļø KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION.

ā˜ļø Keep your finger off the trigger.

ā±ļø Follow your fi***rm/am******on manufacturer’s guidance and your range’s procedure before attempting to unload or clear the fi***rm.

šŸ”« Once it’s safe to do so, remove the suspect cartridge and set it aside appropriately—don’t immediately put it back into the fi***rm and ā€œtry it again.ā€

If you’re unsure, call your Range Safety Officer or instructor over.

That’s exactly what we’re there for.

āš ļø AND DON’T CONFUSE EITHER WITH A SQUIB

Yesterday we talked about a squib load:

šŸ’„ Squib: Cartridge fires, but the projectile may remain lodged in the barrel.

ā³ Hangfire: Cartridge fires—but only after an unexpected delay.

āŒ Misfire: Cartridge fails to fire.

Three am******on problems.

Three very different situations.

Recognizing the difference matters.

šŸŽÆ BC TACTICAL TIP

When you expect BANG and get CLICK, don’t let curiosity override safe gun handling.

MUZZLE SAFE. FINGER OFF. GIVE IT TIME.

Then determine what happened.

šŸ’¬ YOUR TURN:

Before this post, did you know the difference between a misfire, hangfire, and squib?

šŸŽÆ BC Tactical –
Fi***rm Fundamentals #43

āš ļø SQUIB LOADS:
WHEN ā€œTHAT DIDN’T FEEL RIGHTā€ REALLY MATTERS

You’re shooting and suddenly…

POP instead of BANG.

The recoil feels unusually light.

Something just feels different.

šŸ›‘ STOP SHOOTING.

You may have experienced a squib load, and recognizing one before firing another round can prevent a damaged fi***rm or serious injury.

šŸ’„ WHAT IS A SQUIB LOAD?

A squib occurs when a cartridge fires but the bullet doesn’t have enough energy to completely exit the barrel.

The projectile may become lodged somewhere inside the bore.

The dangerous part?

Your fi***rm may still be capable of chambering another round.

If you fire that next round into an obstructed barrel, the pressure has nowhere to safely go. That can cause catastrophic fi***rm failure and serious injury.

šŸ¤” WHY DOES A SQUIB HAPPEN?

There are several possible causes:

šŸ”¹ Missing or insufficient powder
If a cartridge contains too little—or in some circumstances no—propellant, the primer alone may generate enough pressure to push the bullet into the barrel but not enough to send it completely through.

šŸ”¹ Am******on manufacturing defect
Factory am******on is generally very reliable, but manufacturing problems can occur.

šŸ”¹ Improperly assembled/reloaded am******on
Errors involving the cartridge components can result in insufficient pressure to propel the bullet completely through the bore.

šŸ”¹ Contaminated or compromised am******on
Am******on exposed to conditions that damage its components may not perform as intended.

šŸ‘‚ WHAT DOES A SQUIB FEEL LIKE?

You might notice:

āš ļø A quieter-than-normal POP

āš ļø Significantly reduced or unusual recoil

āš ļø The fi***rm doesn’t cycle normally

āš ļø Smoke or gases behaving differently than expected

āš ļø Or simply that instinctive feeling of ā€œThat wasn’t right.ā€

Don’t ignore it.

šŸ›‘ WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

STOP FIRING IMMEDIATELY.

ā˜ļø Finger off the trigger.

āž”ļø Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

šŸ”« Safely unload the fi***rm.

šŸ‘€ Have the barrel checked for an obstruction before firing again.

If you aren’t certain how to safely inspect or address the problem, don’t guess. Get a qualified gunsmith or knowledgeable range professional involved.

šŸŽÆ BC TACTICAL TIP:

Learn the normal sound, recoil, and feel of your fi***rm and am******on.

When something suddenly feels different, your first reaction shouldn’t be:

ā€œLet’s try another one.ā€

It should be:

STOP. SOMETHING CHANGED. FIND OUT WHY.

One trigger press can turn a simple am******on malfunction into a catastrophic fi***rm failure if there’s a bullet obstructing the barrel.

šŸ’¬ YOUR TURN:

Have you ever experienced a squib load—or heard one happen on the firing line? What gave it away?

08/27/2026

šŸŽÆ BC Tactical –
Fi***rm Fundamentals #42

THE GUN MALFUNCTIONED… BUT WAS IT THE GUN?

Your pistol fails to feed, eject, or cycle correctly.

First reaction?

ā€œSomething’s wrong with my gun!ā€ 😩

Maybe.

But before blaming the fi***rm, remember that a semi-automatic pistol is a system, and several things can contribute to a malfunction.

šŸ”« THE FI***RM
Dirty components, worn parts, improper lubrication, or a mechanical issue can absolutely cause problems.

šŸ“¦ THE MAGAZINE
Damaged feed lips, a weak spring, debris, or a magazine that simply doesn’t run reliably in that fi***rm can cause feeding issues.

šŸ’„ THE AM******ON
Different loads can perform differently. Occasionally am******on itself can be the source of a problem.

🤲 THE SHOOTER
Yes… sometimes it’s us. šŸ˜‚

A weak or unstable grip can prevent some semi-automatic pistols from cycling reliably. The fi***rm needs a stable platform to work against as the slide cycles.

So What Do You Do?

Don’t immediately start changing everything.

Look for a pattern.

Does it happen with one particular magazine?

One type of am******on?

Only with one shooter?

Only after the fi***rm becomes especially dirty?

Those details can help narrow down what’s actually happening.

BC Tactical Tip

A malfunction is information.

Don’t just clear it and forget about it—especially if it keeps happening.

Pay attention to what happened, when it happened, and what was different.

That’s how you figure out whether the problem is:

Gun • Magazine • Am******on • Shooter

šŸ’¬ YOUR TURN:
Have you ever blamed a fi***rm for a malfunction… only to discover something ELSE was causing it? šŸ˜‚ Tell us what it was!

Fi***rm Fundamentals #41

CHANGE ONE THING AT A TIME

Your shots aren’t going where you want them.

So you change your grip.

Move your trigger finger.

Adjust your stance.

Change your sight picture.

Then shoot again.

Your group moved—but which change caused it? šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

When you’re trying to correct a shooting problem, resist the temptation to fix everything at once.

šŸŽÆ Start With the Fundamentals

Take a slow, deliberate group and identify what you’re actually seeing.

Then choose ONE variable to work on.

Maybe it’s:

šŸ‘‰ Trigger press
🤲 Grip pressure
šŸ‘€ Sight picture
🦶 Stance
🫁 Breathing
šŸ”« Your presentation

Make the adjustment and shoot another group.

Compare the results.

Did the group tighten?

Did your point of impact change?

Did nothing change at all?

Now you actually have information you can use.

And Don’t Forget the Equipment

Sometimes the shooter isn’t the only variable.

Different am******on, bullet weights, sights, grip inserts—or even switching fi***rms—can change what you’re seeing on the target.

That’s another reason to keep everything else as consistent as possible while you’re troubleshooting.

BC Tactical Tip

If you change five things and your shooting improves, you learned almost nothing.

Change one thing.

Test it.

Read the target.

Then decide what comes next.

Training isn’t guessing. It’s problem solving. šŸŽÆ

šŸ’¬ YOUR TURN:
What’s the first fundamental you check when your groups suddenly start opening up?
