Coach Taj Dashaun calls it the "Watch Tower". Others call it the River of Thoughts or The Parade. There are many metaphors to help you visualize how to separate yourself from your thoughts so that you can choose and modify how your respond to them.
This is called Emotional Self-Regulation. The key to it is to be able to identify your thoughts as they arise, and then create enough space between your thoughts and actions to have the ability to choose your actions in response to your thoughts or to choose to have different thoughts all together.
