All skill levels ages 5 and up learn together in a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment. The Martial Arts Fitness Center of Austin is an affiliate school with the Martial Arts Fitness Center of Rochester. We teach Traditional Taekwondo under the style and philosophy of Simmudo with membership of the Simmudo Association.
- What does that mean exactly? We teach Taekwondo, an encompassing na
me for the Korean Martial Art that includes many aspects and many self defense styles that have cultural influences with the South Korea Nation. We are under the style of Simmudo, a form of martial arts created by Grand Master Pan Gong Song of Shi Heung City, South Korea. Simmudo can be divided into three sections:
• Hoshin-suel – Throws, locks, and join manipulations for self defense.
• Chae-suel – Finishing the self-defense technique by locking up or pinning an attacker to allow quick engagement when multiple attackers are present.
• Kwon-suel – “Striking Technique”. Learning the strikes from the hands and feet that are similar to Taekwondo, Chung Do Kwan, and KongSooDo. While Taekwondo eventually became a “sport” style martial art, Simmudo has maintained its roots in a traditional sense by focusing on the “art” side by keeping the teaching focused on self defense.
- Why is this important? We teach martial arts that has a practical approach in everyday self-defense. We do not train on “point systems” nor expect our students to compete in competitions (although they are always welcome to if they wish). We teach a traditional style the help children and adults gain confidence, self-respect, discipline, and coordination with the mind and body. Martial Arts becomes a defining characteristic of an individual who studies it. Martial Arts gives children and adults focus and perseverance that expands to other aspects of their life, whether at school, work, or every day interactions. Our students are expected to maintain their training, self-development, respect, and discipline outside the training center as well as inside.
- How do I know that this training is good for me or my child? We welcome walk ins and spectators. Everyone is welcome to come to a class and see how our instructorship and training is done. Questions are always welcome, both in person or through direct messaging. Our students are instructed and trained not to directly strike another individual at training until they obtain a high rank and have proven themselves capable of controlling power and technique. The student’s safety is our top priority.
- What ages do you train? There is no maximum age for training!
- When are classes? How much does it cost? Our classes occur year-round. We do not have, nor do we expect specific start dates. You are welcome to come and start at any time of the year. We hold hour long classes. Our class times are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00pm and 6:00pm, and Saturday mornings at 9:00am and 10:00am. We advise every new student to start with our “Introductory” program. This program is $25.00 for 4 classes. The student can choose when those classes occur, whether that be 4 times in one week, one time a week for 4 weeks, and everything in between. Once finished with the Introductory program, we require the student be registered with our Center. This is a one time, life time registration fee of $35.00, and this fee includes one uniform as well (uniform prices alone range between $35.00-$55.00 depending on the size of the individual). If the student has to leave for a time (like many of our students do when going to college) there is no additional start up or re-registration fee. Once the Introductory program and registration is complete, tuition is paid monthly. We have two payment levels:
- $35.00 for attending one class a week
- $65.00 for unlimited classes where the student can attend as many classes they want. With 6 classes offered every week this equates to a little under $3.00 a class.
- We offer $5.00 deduction off of the unlimited level if the payment is received before the 10th of the month.
- I’m interested in attending a class but not sure of my fitness level or what to wear. We accommodate all sizes and fitness levels. Our goal is your personal development, no matter what stage of life you are in currently. We recommend to wear comfortable cloth like workout cloths (sweatpants, t-shirt etc.) for your first training session(s).
- I have previous experience in martial arts. I would hate to start over. Is there some way to maintain my previous rank? Yes! We will train the student appropriately to learn our system and style up to the ranking position they obtained previously. Although initially this might feel like “starting over” our goal will be to get the student to their previous rank as fast as prudent, usually as fast as within the first 3 months or their first test (if skill and knowledge are appropriately there).
