Defending division champion San Rafael made the trip down to southern California Monday to take on Bakersfield at venerable Sam Lynn Ballpark, where they received a sterling performance from starting pitcher James Courshon. The former Chico State lefty threw 66 strikes of 98 pitches for a complete game 4-0 win over the Train Robbers, allowing five hits and no walks while striking out seven. Fred Buckson aided the San Rafael cause at the plate with a single, double, two runs and an RBI as the Pacifics pulled into a virtual tie with Dublin for first place. Bakersfield sits a half-game back in third.

In the Mountain South, Pecos catcher Selvin Anderson belted a solo homer and added an RBI double to help the Bills to a 15-10 home win over Tucson at Chevron Field. Anthony Hampton posted four hits, two runs and two ribbies as Pecos pulled to within a game of Tucson and a half-game behind Alpine in the division standings. Only three games separate the five Mountain South clubs.

And in the Mountain North, Grand Junction stretched their winning streak to five games with a 14-4 victory in Trinidad. Nicholas Sall homered and drove in five runs for the Razorback Suckers and Basiel Williams made the most of three singles and a fielder's choice by stealing five bases and scoring four runs while driving in two more. Grand Junction pulled a half-game past Trinidad into second to trail leaders Garden City by 1.5 games.

Since every team but one should have completed at least ten games after tonight, we'll take our first look at individual batting and pitching leaders for both the Pacific and combined Mountain divisions tomorrow.

A big showdown in Tucson Wednesday, where the defending champion Saguaros welcomed the Pecos Bills for their home opener in Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium. A 3-1 win for the home team placed both sides in a first-place tie for the Mountain Division South with identical 4-4 records. The game was halted after six innings as Tucson starter Jaymon Cervantes went all the abbreviated way for the win.

Perennial power Alpine's road woes continued as the Cowboys dropped their fourth straight away from home in Trinidad's Central Park as the Triggers completed their three-game sweep with a 12-11 triumph when Chris Viamonte stroked a walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the tenth entrada.

And it was "bombs away" in Santa Fe, where the Fuego were crushed by visiting Roswell, 36-8, in the opener of a three-game series at Fort Marcy Park to fall to 3-3 and into a virtual tie for first with Tucson and Pecos. The Invaders are a half-game out of third at 2-3. No details are available for that one.

Back to a seven-game slate on Thursday night as the Pacific Division returns from a day off, with first-place Bakersfield (9-5) drawing the bye.
