I had an accident in 1990 that caused me to have to go through several bouts of steroid treatments, an epidural, a facet block, and finally full back surgery. The doctors told me that my condition was degenerative and I could only expect for it to get worse. The surgery helped for a few years then it did get worse ... Much worse. As the years went by I experienced debilitating levels of pain in my
back and lower extremities, My legs, ankles, and feet would swell and it became excruciatingly difficult to walk and I went from Walking, to Walker, to Wheelchair. As I aged, my metabolism slowed down ... That combined with the lack of mobility ... My weight skyrocketed. In March 2010 my husband and I went to Niagara Falls for a romantic get away and I was devastated to find I couldn't walk from my hotel 1/4 block to the corner. I apologized to my husband profusely thinking my condition had ruined this special time for both of us ... But he became my hero that day as he went back into the hotel, got a wheelchair, and pushed me all over Niagara Falls, just happy that I would be able to enjoy the sights with him. My goddaughter encouraged me to try walking the track and the 1st time I walked around a track ... I did it with my walker ... It was awful! ... Things had gotten so bad I had to start going through the supermarkets and other stores and markets in a wheelchair. I own both a power chair and a walker and I thought my condition would consigned me to a wheelchair for the rest of my life. In January of 2011, my doctor referred me to the aquatics program as part of my physical therapy. I was both surprised and thrilled that when I entered the water, the pain and pressure in my extremities lifted and for the 2 hours I spent in the pool I had decreased pain and increased mobility. Well ... after 6 weeks my prescription ran out and I found out that I would have to wait 6 months before the doctor could refer me to the aquatics program again. I was perplexed ... I had lost 10 pounds in the 6 weeks that I had participated in the aquatics program and I didn't want to go back to utter pain and helplessness so In March of 2011, I joined the Family "Y" and started their water aerobics program. That program helped me gain enough strength in my muscles and lower extremities to attempt my 1st Zumba class and the rest is history! I have to admit that 1st class presented quite a challenge, but I survived and persevered. As my muscles and overall body strength increased ... I dropped an additional 70 pounds ... Caught the Zumba bug ... And now I am a licensed Zumba Fitness Instructor.
