⛳ THE GIANT KILLER
Ever wondered how No. 16 got its nickname?
During the 1930 Southeastern Open, Bobby Jones was cruising toward victory when the par-3 16th handed him a triple bogey.
Jones still went on to win the tournament by an incredible 13 strokes, but No. 16 had made its mark.
Sometime afterward, the hole earned a fitting nickname:
“Giant Killer.”
Nearly a century later, the name remains.
How many of you have fallen victim to the Giant Killer? 👀⛳

🏛️ Forest Hills Fact Friday
Long before today’s giant tee became a familiar sight at Forest Hills, another oversized piece of golf equipment stood outside the old clubhouse: a giant golf ball.
According to Augusta and Aiken in Golf’s Golden Age, the copper ball was reportedly made in a machine shop at Fort Gordon and even featured the same number of dimples as a golf ball of its day.
In March 2023, Forest Hills welcomed another oversized landmark: a nearly 30-foot-long, 8-foot-high golf tee, created to commemorate 45 years of partnership with Augusta University golf.
From a giant golf ball outside the old clubhouse to a giant golf tee near the first tee, one thing apparently hasn’t changed:
Forest Hills still has a thing for larger-than-life golf. 😉⛳

Familiar Names in Forest Hills History ⛳

Over the years, Forest Hills has welcomed some remarkable young golfers to its fairways through collegiate competition.

Davis Love III was part of North Carolina’s winning effort at the 1982 Forest Hills Invitational, followed by Arizona State’s Phil Mickelson, who captured the Invitational title in 1989.

Forest Hills has also crossed paths with other familiar names in golf history, including Tiger Woods, who visited the course during his first Masters appearance in 1995 to hold a clinic for local youth and former Masters caddies.

A century of golf has left Forest Hills with plenty of stories to tell, and quite a few familiar names along the way. 💚⛳

A little Tuesday morning TLC. 🌱⛳

While the course is closed on Tuesday mornings, our maintenance team is hard at work taking care of the details that keep Forest Hills looking and playing its best.

With 18 holes and a lot of ground to cover, every Tuesday morning counts.

A big thank you to our maintenance crew for everything they do behind the scenes. 💚

🏛️ Forest Hills Fact Friday

Bobby Jones didn’t just win at Forest Hills. He later called the golf he played here some of his very best.

On April 1, 1930, Jones won the Southeastern Open at Forest Hills, his first victory of what would become his historic Grand Slam year.

Looking back on the tournament, Jones said:

“That’s where I played my finest golf of 1930.”

And it all started right here at Forest Hills. 💚⛳

🏛️ Forest Hills Fact Friday

Long before Augusta became known around the world for its Masters tradition, Forest Hills was helping establish the city as one of America's premier winter golf destinations.

Pictured here is the Forest Hills-Ricker Hotel, the centerpiece of a luxury resort that opened in the 1920s. Visitors traveled from cities like Chicago, New York, Detroit, and Philadelphia to enjoy Augusta's mild winters, with golf, horseback riding, polo, hunting, and more all part of the experience.

Forest Hills wasn't simply built as a golf course. It was created as a destination, helping shape Augusta's rich golf history nearly 100 years ago. 💚⛳

Have you heard the story of the Forest Hills-Ricker Hotel before? We'd love to hear your thoughts below!
