Simply standing in front of a horse and gently stroking his nose can suddenly make you feel all peaceful. How is it possible that horses have such a calming effect on us?

HART's DID YOU KNOW MONDAY!
You've probably heard the phrase, "Eats like a horse". In the horse's case, this is TRUE! We'd like to share some basic information on feeding a horse!

Horses are herbivores and live primarily on forage. Forage can come in the form of pasture grasses, hay, or hay substitutes. The average horse will eat anywhere from 1-3% of his body weight in hay. For example: a 1000 pound idle horse may need 2.5% body weight in hay to maintain proper condition. That's 25 pounds of hay per day. This intake changes depending on their age, activity level, etc.

Horses may need feed, or grain, as a way to supplement missing nutrients or calories in addition to their forage diets. Generally, horses in our area are deficient in some vitamins and minerals due to the quality of forages we have available. In this case a vitamin/mineral supplement may be necessary to balance nutrients only. In other cases, horses may need more calories than only hay will provide, due to their voluntary intakes. In these instances grain is fed as an extra energy source as well.

Take a look below at some examples of costs from two horses we use at HART:

HART and Royal T Ranch, LLC have a unique relationship compared to most of the therapeutic riding facilities in the state.

HART leases the facility and equines for a minimal cost. Other nonprofit centers own their property, including horses, and have all the expenses going with that, such as property insurance, taxes, complete maintenance from cleaning to lawn mowing to supplying all the toilet paper! And horse feed of course.

Why does Royal T Ranch, LLC partner with HART? The enjoyment of helping the community experience the love of horses is number 1. Seeing the students smile and watch them grow has its own rewards. There are a lot of horse lovers that do not have the opportunity to be hands on with horses, they may choose to volunteer to engage with the equines. Our horses benefit from getting that extra pat on the neck and grooming, or even exercise. Experienced volunteers have opportunities to exercise the horses as well.

Thank you to Royal T for donating so much to allow HART to help our special students and volunteers.
