NeNe's Swim Babies, Inc.

NeNe's Swim Babies, Inc. Survival Swim Lessons for young children! I teach in Maryville, TN. I teach 6 month olds to 9 year olds how to survive a water accident.

The Most Experienced Survival Swim Instructor in Knoxville, TN with over 30 years in the Industry! Teaching private, one on one survival swim lessons to infants and young children. Children learn how to swim for fun as well as to roll over to a float for a breath. They can also perform these skills fully clothed to survive if they were to fall in the water alone. The float and roll to a float is t

he most important skill to learn in Survival Swimming. Infants and toddlers can not lift their head to take a breath. If your child falls into a body of water, rolling to their backs and maintaining a float to breathe is critical to surviving. If your child can crawl, your child can learn to float! If your child can walk, your child can learn to swim float swim! Learning these critical survival skills takes time and patience. All children learn at their own pace! I teach them until they are safe. Survival skills will give your child the confidence and skills to respect the water, survive a water accident and truly learn to enjoy swimming! You will have the PEACE of mind to knowing your child has the skills to survive a water accident and can finally enjoy your time around the water as well! SKILLS first, then FUN!! ONE of the BEST things you can do for your child is to empower them by giving them these skills to enjoy the water for life! LESSONS:

FLOATERS: (6mo to crawlers)(10 minutes per day)(About 4-8 weeks) Learn to hold their breath, float, roll to a float, maintain a float and fall into the water in many different scenarios even with clothes on to perform their survival skills.
SWIMMERS: (Walkers to 9 yo)(10 minutes per day for 6-12 weeks) OR (20 minutes per day (Older children 2yo up) for 3-6 weeks) Learn to hold their breath, swim with their face in the water to the wall, flip over from their backs to a swim, float on their backs, roll from a swim to a float, maintain a float, fall in the water and roll to a float and swim float swim to safety. Swimmers also perform these skills fully clothed.
MAINTENANCE: (All floaters and swimmers who have completed their course above.) Once skilled, children come to the pool once a month for a week to float or swim so they can maintain their confidence and skills. This is a motor skill and needs practice so the muscles continue to memorize the motion and the kids trust their ability to perform these skills. You never know when an accident is going to happen and the children need to be ready! We can not expect them to perform if they haven't been in the water in months. Swimming is a year round sport!

You might think that those flotation devices are great for giving you a break and giving your child some independence in the water. But here is what they actually do:

1) Make your child think that they can swim when they really can’t, which makes it that much more likely that they will try to get to the water later, when they don’t have the device on and then drown.

2) Put your child in the drowning position and teach their bodies muscle memory for that position so that when they get into water without it, they will immediately get into the drowning position, making drowning faster and easier.

3) Make it very, very hard for swim instructors to unteach the wrong positioning in the water, resulting in kids taking sometimes twice as long to learn their skills.

Please don’t use attachable floatation devices in pools with your kids. Stay with them in the water and help them feel what their own bodies can and can’t do there so that they develop a healthy respect for it.

Don’t use these devices. Get them skilled instead. Let the pool be a place to practice and gain skills to survive in the water.

Where is it ok to use attachable devices?

It’s ok to use US Coast Guard approved life jackets when you are in and around open water, because it is unpredictable and can be dangerous even for good swimmers.

It’s ok to allow their temporary use during crowded camp situations where you can’t be there and there is a higher child to adult ratio (although my best advice is to not allow a non-swimmer to participate in water activities at camp).

It’s ok to use them at water parks, where it’s crowded and the water can mimic open water with its’ unpredictability.

It’s ok for kids with special needs who may never be able to learn to swim but who want to experience the water to use them, with one-on-one touch supervision in place.

Ultimately, your child’s own body is their best defense in the water. Make sure they are able to use it safely there.
