Tevis Cup 100 Mile One Day Ride - Western States Trail Foundation The Western States Trail Ride, popularly called the Tevis Cup is the annual 100-Mile One-Day endurance ride from Lake Tahoe to Auburn, California.

Real photos— remember those? Courtesy of Robert Oram, these actual photographs show a Tevis from 20+ years ago. Can you believe it?

Robert shares: “I have been going through some wonderful old photos. These came up recently. I was crewing for Nancy Stinnet, and Nancy was riding with Barbara White. I crewed for Nancy, and Barbara had her husband and Julie Suhr crew.

When I started riding, I’d contacted Julie Suhr after reading about her in a horse periodical. She put me in touch with Nancy, and my quest for Tevis began. I rode anything, any time, any where. Eventually I got my horse, Traveler. He was $350, untrained, and everything I could have wanted. Then, I bought the property next to Nancy.....and the rest is history.

The endurance community here in Santa Cruz was wonderful, helpful and very experienced. Lucky me!”

“The rugged and dusty mountain endurance race now known as the Tevis Cup Ride was born as an effort to resuscitate an Old West legend: the Pony Express. That’s why a prized silver belt buckle Tevis riders attain for finishing this modern event shows the emblem of a mounted, galloping wilderness mailman, as well as an embossed legend: 100 miles — one day.

It began because an Auburn-area lumberman, banker and backcountry adventurer, Wendell Robie, was enamored of pioneer history. On an annual series of three-day rides over the Lake Tahoe-to-Auburn mountain trail in the 1950s – along an old Gold Rush path called Scott’s Route – Robie would chat with fellow riders about the bygone exploits of the Pony Express. While others scoffed, Robie asserted modern people and their mounts could indeed prove equal to those legendary rough riders.”

Brandon Brunner remembers watching the Tevis Cup live feed all night in prior years and telling himself, “I want to do that.” This year, on his second attempt, he earned his first completion and Tevis buckle riding Jenny, a 9 year old Anglo-Arab mare.

It was a great year for first-time finishers with 15 riders getting their Tevis buckle. Lynn Kenelly came all the way from Montana and rode Rhett, the 7 year old Shagya gelding (owned by Katherine Voyer) 100 miles to the finish line.

Congratulations Lynn and Rhett!
