It’s right around the corner, or rather, the bend. The next Trail Work Campout weekend is this Saturday and Sunday, June 20-21.

Trail work is crucial throughout the year, but of course even more necessary now that the Tevis Cup is less than 6 weeks away and the Western States Endurance Run is even sooner.

Last Saturday’s Ed Ride was a great one! 15 horse and rider teams participated in the fun on a scorching day in Eldorado Canyon.

Thank you to everyone who made this event a success, and stay tuned for news of next year’s Education Ride, which will return to a two day format.

The 2026 Tevis Education Ride was a huge success. 15 horse and rider teams and 5 mentors braved the heat of Eldorado Canyon on Saturday, June 13th. They traveled from the Chicken Hawk staging area through Michigan Bluff, down to Eldorado Creek, up to the Deadwood well pump, and out to the top of Devil’s Thumb. Then they reversed direction and came back to camp. They went out a bit staggered to ensure that there wouldn’t be any two-way traffic on trail. There was even a fun challenge/photo op for riders on the return trip. Everyone returned to camp healthy and happy, but tired from a hard day’s work. After a dinner of cheeseburgers and hot dogs, participants and volunteers were treated to a Q&A session with Barbara White, Kathie Perry, Heather Reynolds, Nicole Wertz, and John Perry. Next year we will return to the two day format for the Education Ride with a tentative date of June 11th—13th. Check in here for updates on entry opening, fitness requirements, and date confirmation.
Thank you to Echo Valley Ranch and for donating the use of the water troughs and the amazing hay and grain for the vet check. Thank you to Dr. Jennifer Mayfield and Dr. Anne Williams for the outstanding veterinary support. Expedition to Fetch the Troughs from El Dorado Creek:

Whilst there's plenty of water in El Dorado Creek (at the bottom of the canyon between Deadwood and Michigan Bluff), getting the troughs and a pump down there to make it accessible to horses is no joke.

Horses climb to Michigan Bluff on the singletrack trail, but riders may have noticed a track which criss-crosses the trail a few times shortly after they start up.

The "road" (using the term loosely) to access the location is only used a handful of times per year - for the Education Ride, for the Ride itself, as well as for the Western States Endurance Run and their training run in May. As a result, it's always an exciting expedition to get down there (extreme 4x4 in places), and never something to be undertaken without taking All The Equipment (trees can drop without warning, particular after the fire). Just because it was open on the way in, doesn't mean the same is true on the way out.

Nevertheless, El Dorado Creek remains one of the jewels of the ride and such a beautiful spot. Even though it can be toasty down there on the day (understatement), we encourage riders to take a moment enjoy the loveliness and appreciate how lucky we are that the gold miners carved out this route.

Heads up! The 2026 Tevis Education Ride will be taking place this weekend, June 13th. Riders will be on trail between the Chicken Hawk Staging area and Devil's Thumb from approximately 8am--5pm. There will be a Vet Check at the Deadwood pump, so it could get congested there for a bit.

If you plan to be on the Western States Trail this weekend, please be alert to the possibility of two-way traffic on trail, and extra vehicular traffic near the trail access points. It's going to be hot, so make sure you stay hydrated, and if you need help, don't be afraid to ask. Stay safe and have fun!

It all starts with one, and sometimes even NONE.

This buckle was earned in 1968 on the rider’s second attempt at Tevis. The rider said that after getting pulled the previous year she was surprised by, “… my strong determination to return the next year to seize that shiny buckle.” That rider has now completed the ride 34 times and her name is Barbara White.

Barbara and many other Tevis legends will be part of our Tevis Ed. Ride panel discussion, AND she will be out on trail offering info. and guidance to participants on how to successfully traverse the Tevis Trail.
