Bulldogs Battle After Tough Start at Plattsmouth
The Auburn Bulldogs varsity softball team traveled to Plattsmouth this evening for a single game against the Blue Devils, and while the final result wasn’t what we wanted, there were plenty of positives to take away from the night.
The Bulldogs got on the board first, putting a run across in the top of the first inning. Unfortunately, Plattsmouth answered in a big way in the bottom half of the inning, putting up seven runs, including a three-run home run. A few costly defensive mistakes made the inning even more difficult for Auburn.
But rather than allowing one tough inning to define the game, the Bulldogs did something we’ve been challenging them to do all season—they reset, recharge, and get back to work.
After the first inning, Auburn settled in and played much better softball. The defense held Plattsmouth scoreless until the fifth inning, giving the Bulldogs opportunities to battle their way back into the game. Auburn continued to compete and eventually added two more runs in the sixth inning, extending the game and keeping the pressure on.
Plattsmouth ultimately closed things out with an 8-3 victory.
As disappointing as the loss was, it was incredibly encouraging to watch the Bulldogs continue to fight and work toward playing a complete game. There was still some rough play throughout the night, but those mistakes are part of the learning process.
If this group continues to respond the way they did tonight—by battling back, competing, and refusing to let one bad inning become five bad innings—we believe they will be in a great position by the end of the season to compete in postseason play.
We go right back to work tomorrow morning.
