“Disrespected and Discarded: How African Club Owners Are Failing Local Players”
In the heart of African football lies an uncomfortable truth — many local players are treated with shocking levels of disrespect by the very people meant to protect their careers: club owners.
❌ Players are undervalued
Young men and women sacrifice their bodies, time, and energy chasing the dream. But in return, they’re given:
• No contracts.
• Unpaid or delayed salaries.
• Zero medical coverage.
• Verbal abuse when they speak up.
Some owners see them not as professionals, but as disposable tools. Once injured or no longer “useful,” these players are cast aside without concern for their welfare or future.
“You’re lucky to even be here.”
“If you don’t like it, leave.”
These are the kinds of statements players hear behind closed doors.
⚠️ A toxic culture of silence
Many players fear speaking out because of blacklisting, threats, or career sabotage. This silence has created a toxic system where power is abused and talent is wasted.
How do we expect Ghanaian or African football to grow when the grassroots are treated like garbage?
🛑 It’s time to hold people accountable
Respect, dignity, and professionalism are not luxuries — they are rights.
Footballers are not slaves. They are athletes, workers, and human beings who deserve fair contracts, prompt payment, and respect from those in power.
📢 We call on the following bodies to act:
• Ghana Football Association ()
• CAF – Confederation of African Football ()
• FIFPRO Africa ()
• Ghana Professional Footballers Association (GPFA)
• Ministry of Youth and Sports – Ghana ()
• FIFA ()
You have the platform, the power, and the responsibility to change this culture.
🗣️ It starts with us.
