REST: What if your brain needs a different kind of rest than the kind we usually give it?

Dr. Kim, a neurologist, recently wrote about “radical rest,” the idea of intentionally stepping away from external stimulation so your brain has space to slow down, process and reset.

That looks different from scrolling, streaming or filling every quiet moment with information.

Try 5–10 minutes of genuine mental downtime between periods of focused work. Take a walk without headphones. Sit quietly. Do something repetitive and undemanding.

As an NBC-HWC, Certified Performance and Leadership Coach, and Certified Life Coach, rest is an important part of sustainable performance. Rest is not the opposite of productivity. It supports it.

Inspired: Dr. Kim, The B.L.U.F. on Radical Rest.

HARD TIMES: Who makes up the American working class today? What are their jobs, careers, salaries, cost of living, and can they keep up with inflation? Can they afford electricity, healthy groceries, and housing payments? Are their government officials representative of them and do they legislate for their concerns? With the rise of AI and government deregulation, how will our way of life and livelihoods change? If you’re wondering why so many are moving abroad, you may be pushing through without paying attention. As Arsenio Hall used to say, “Things that make you go hmmm.” 🎧💭 🤔

While preparing your own meals is best, there are times when we need timesavers. Fast food doesn't have to be off-limits for people with diabetes. When you make intentional, informed, choices and plan ahead, utilizing online nutrition calculators, and focusing on portion sizes, you can enjoy meals from popular chains without spiking your blood sugar.

Whether you're craving tacos, burgers or a quick salad, there are plenty of diabetes-friendly options to choose from. Moderation is key, and small adjustments like choosing lower-sodium condiments, adding fiber-rich sides or opting for smaller portions can make all the difference. And a beverage without sugar is always best! With these tips, navigating the drive-thru can become a manageable, balanced part of your lifestyle. Also, adding a 15 minute walk after eating always helps with blood glucose management.

Need a quick healthy meal on the road that won't send your blood sugar soaring? Check out our top picks at the most popular fast-food restaurants.

(4 minute 🎧 listen) HEAT in the US may contribute to nearly 9,000 deaths annually, about five times the official count. Heat-related illness can be overlooked when it triggers or worsens conditions such as heart disease, and no region is exempt, even places not traditionally considered “hot.”

Heat safety is wisdom and preventive health. Make a cooling plan before the next heat wave, and treat extreme heat as a serious health risk:

🌡️Ask a healthcare professional whether your medications or health conditions increase heat sensitivity, and never stop medication without guidance.

🌡️Learn the warning signs: headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, confusion, fainting, or unusually hot skin. Confusion, loss of consciousness, or suspected heat stroke is an emergency, call 911.

🌡️Check the forecast and heat advisories before outdoor activities.

🌡️Hydrate regularly; don’t wait until you feel thirsty.

🌡️Limit strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.

🌡️Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and take frequent cooling breaks.

🌡️Use air conditioning, fans, cooling centers, or other safe spaces when needed.

🌡️Check on older adults, young children, neighbors, and anyone living alone.

An NPR investigation found that people in the U.S. are dying from heat much more often than official counts show. We explore the reasons why — and how lives can be saved.

SOCIAL GRACES: If people are looking at or treating you like the 1st photo when you feel like the 2nd, this is for you.

The act of unloading overwhelming feelings onto someone else WITHOUT their consent has an unofficial term. It’s like an extended, one-sided version of venting and is treated as one of the worst social sins you can commit. Tip toeing around this can make people afraid to share about deeply personal experiences although social support is one way people cope.

PRO-TIP: Ask if the person has the capacity to listen before assuming that they do.

It turns out, we all age at varying rates. Super-agers may have great genes, but research shows our habits and routines - everything from what we eat and how we move our bodies to who we spend our time with - matter a lot, when it comes to aging well.

Longevity research is booming. Scientists are looking for ways to target the basic biology of aging. And here's the exciting part: Our biological age appears to be malleable.
