MUST WATCH* Scottie with the biggest emotional meltdown I’ve ever seen him have😬. Golf makes even the generational go crazy. Also, take enough club to be past pin high on 16. It’s not a birdie hole. Was Scottie pressing after a frustrating back 9 and not birding the Par 5 15??

**The Practice Round You Skip Is the Edge You Give Away**

*By Chris Petefish, Course of Action Golf*

Think about the last time you showed up to a final exam having only studied half the material. You knew enough to feel confident walking in, but not enough to handle the questions that actually showed up. That's what it feels like to tee it up in a tournament without a proper practice round.

Most junior golfers treat the practice round as a warmup. A casual walk. Something to check off the list before the real stuff begins. But the players who consistently outperform their talent level know something the others don't: the practice round is where you build the course map that your brain runs on for the next 72 holes.

**Talent is the floor, not the ceiling**

At the highest level, the talent gap between players is smaller than you think. What separates scores isn't ball striking. It's decision making. And good decisions come from information. The player who knows the wind shifts on the back nine at noon, who knows which landing zone buys the most margin off the 14th tee, that player has a structural advantage before they hit a single shot.

That's what a practice round gives you. Not a score to post. Not a warmup session. A competitive intelligence file you carry into every round of the tournament.

**Fewer events, better results**

There's a common instinct in junior golf to play as many events as possible. More reps, more exposure, more chances to post a score. But quality of preparation beats volume of starts almost every time.

A player who plays 15 events with genuine prep will almost always outperform the player who plays 22 events winging it each week. The nervous system performs better in familiar environments. When you've already walked the course once with full attention, Round 1 doesn't feel like Round 1.

Don't be the player who says "I got comfortable with the course in Round 2." Be comfortable heading into Round 1 and just shoot lower from the start.

**The edge is informational, not physical**

The edge in competitive golf is almost never physical. It's the player who walks to the 7th tee knowing there's a crosswind at 11am, knowing the left side opens the green, knowing the pin will likely be front left. That player didn't get lucky. They prepared.

Playing fewer events with real preparation will almost always beat playing more events underprepared. Talent and preparation together are nearly unbeatable. Talent alone is just potential.

What College Coaches Are Looking For
In Junior Golfers Right Now

As a proud partner of the Golf Coaches Association of America and featured contributor to Junior Golf Scoreboard, I want to share something that can help players right now.

College coaches are not just watching the swing. They are watching how players manage their game, handle pressure, and make decisions in competition. Strokes gained tells that story. Most juniors have the app. Almost none have a clear plan for how to use it in practice or competition.

That is the difference between a junior who has data and a junior who has an edge.

I was a top 5 player in my high school class, played at Georgia Tech, competed on the Korn Ferry Tour
for three years, reached the top 288 in the world, and played in the 2024 US Open. I am currently a PGA Tour Americas member and PGA of America Class A member, and I work with players as a scoring and strokes gained coach.

For over a decade, Course of Action Golf has helped players navigate elite competition and arrive at the college level prepared. Getting there is harder than ever.

I work alongside every coach your junior already has. I am not here to change the swing. I am here to help them score lower and show up ready. Juniors with a plan on the course handle the stress of competition and make better decisions. -Chris Petefish

TESTIMONIAL
"A guy who has played on all tours is now helping with course management? I signed up right away. Through Chris's help I won the 2025 Southwest Section Championship at Moon Valley which led to my first PGA Tour start at the WM Phoenix Open in 2026. Chris doesn't change your swing. He gives you the tools to compete at the highest level, optimizing shot selection, picking statistically correct targets, and making the game as objective as possible. He's been there, done that, and he wants to make every golfer the best they can be."

-Tommi Avant, PGA Professional

2025 Southwest Section Champion

2026 WM Phoenix Open Competitor

"Working with Chris has been a real game changer for my high school golfer. Using Strokes Gained stats, he identified where my son was leaving strokes on the course and built a clear, data driven plan to fix it. Chris’s guidance on target selection has completely changed how my son approaches his shots, and his scoring has improved significantly as a result. Chris always takes the time to analyze my son’s rounds and gives timely, actionable feedback before and after each tournament. I highly recommend Chris for any junior golfer looking to take their game to the next level." Mike B.- Parent

BLOW UP US OPEN Q HOLE - many wanted to trust me I break down why a 128-yard par 3 at my US Open local qualifier played to a scoring average of 3.65—higher than any hole at last year’s US Open at Oakmont. We examine the hole’s brutal design, including the impossibly small back shelf, firm greens that cause extreme repulsion, and how the effective landing area is smaller than a Prius. I show you why attempting to reach the back pin location was essentially a losing strategy, yet two out of every three players made bogey trying.
