Good Moves Dance

Good Moves Dance History
Good Moves had its beginnings has an outreach program created by Tom Pazik for the Atlanta Ballet.

From 1995–1998, inner city schools were served with classes in ballet, modern, jazz, choreography, costuming and various cultural dance forms from Native American to Chinese Opera. Especially interested students were given scholarships for further study. Toward the end of this period, a performing company was formed, the Consort. In 1994, the Consort attended the Limón Institute’s Summer intensive

at the SUNY, Purchase, N.Y. The company gave a special performance at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and performed extensively throughout metropolitan Atlanta. In 1995, Good Moves became an independent non-profit organization. Annette Lewis and a dedicated group of volunteers raised funds to pay for scholarships for Consort members and to continue outreach in the schools. The Consort continued to develop and maintain a busy performance schedule, including summer work with the artists of the Limón Dance Company. In 1997, Good Moves began its neighborhood dance school, Ed Source, further expanding its role in the community and supporting Outreach programs with scholarships. The Consort participated in the 1997 American Dance Festival at Duke University and studied with Donald McKayle and Limón company members during the summer. Since 1998, Good Moves has further developed and expanded its programming to provide a richer dance experience for the audiences it serves. A prime example of this is the creation of the Inman Park Dance Festival in 2001, a two-day presentation of dance. This festival is the only free to the public festival that presents both classical and modern repertory. Good Moves continues its outstanding services to the community. Classes, performances and workshops are offered through community partners throughout Metro Atlanta and North Georgia. Good Moves commitment to artistic excellence is reflected in the success of its young dancers. In the last five years, eight students who received their dance education and performance experience with Good Moves have been accepted by and received scholarships from the three leading dance conservatories in the country, The Dance Conservatory at SUNY-Purchase, The Boston Conservatory and The Juilliard School. Since the spring of 2004, the Consort has been invited to perform in four Modern Atlanta Dance Festivals.
