We’ve been busy with lots of updates for the car recently! A replacement transmission, rebuilt and improved clutch stack, completely new fueling system, bigger brakes, an ECUmasters ecu, & a RaceCapture for live remote data logging. Possibly re-engineering some suspension & aero components once current projects are closer to completion. Oh & a second alternator! 🙂 Hoping to sign up for some races in due time but we’re keeping a laser focus on program quality for now.

Semi-annual PME update: As some of you know, the Nissan ate a wall pretty hard in the first lap of the first race this season largely due to another driver’s negligent (among other adjectives) driving, which also damaged another competitors car when they pile-drove us into the wall after our initial contact with the wall. Our damage was well beyond the point of reasonably retiring the car, but since we’re stubborn and collectively not in a position to make an entire new car, we set out to repair the chassis. The car has been at Pro Performance Collision and Restoration getting yanked back out just enough for the wheels to spin, fit a front fender and tail light, and take an alignment. It’s looking like we might not be invited to showcase at Concours d’Elegance anymore, but it’s exactly enough to get back to the track. The guys at Pro Performance really saved the car from the junkyard. We were hoping to make it to Barber but we’re still hunting for parts and finding/fixing more issues from the wall contact.

Wanted to again, thank everyone for the support, both physical and spiritual, as this has been a pretty huge bummer for us.

We also want to thank Doc Waldrop, who may be gone, but will forever be part of this team’s history, and the reason we’ve been able to do all this in the first place.

Doc is the reason our team even exists, and if you’ve ever been to registration at a champcar event in the southeast, you’ve probably seen Nolan helping out. Let’s return the favor.

A bit of a bummer this weekend at Road Atlanta. Initially, Friday test day went great, the car felt better and faster than ever. The new engine, suspension and chassis revisions we made worked great and everyone was feeling confident in the car. Saturday morning at 8am the green flag flew to begin the race and the #69 was performing perfectly. Unfortunately about 10 seconds and 1 turn later, a car was shunted into us and sent us into the tire wall under the bridge at ~50mph. Everyone is ok and the car that bonked us into the wall was able to continue racing throughout the day. The #69 unfortunately sustained a serious amount of damage as the car that tapped us into the wall also hit the rear of the car after we hit the wall. The right rear quarter panel was compressed into the rear tire, the front left tie rod snapped, control arm bent, hood folded, fender flares shattered, both bumpers broke off, front and rear lights broke, and the fuel tank misshapen. Seemingly the only thing left unbroken was the team’s spirit. Immediately, the pry bars, welders, trucks, come alongs and hammers were broken out in an effort to get the car back in the fight. Layer after layer we reshaped #69 into something that vaguely resembled an automobile in roughly 2 hours, after having tech certify the car was safe after our “repairs”. The car got back in the water and absolutely ripped, putting down the same times it did on the practice day. After about an hour it started leaning out and sputtering, we brought it back in to find a fuel pump ground that broke during the accident. With that fixed we went back out and were experiencing similar issues, of which we could not get to the bottom of. After some intense parking lot diagnostics we decided to call it and park the car in an effort to not add an engine to the mountain of parts that would need to be replaced. We will make a full assessment of the damage when it can get back to the shop. Much was learned this weekend and as always, we had a blast just being a team. Many thanks to everyone who came to make sure everyone was ok, to those who helped and offered tools, and Champcar staff for making their best efforts to run a safe race.
