Pickleball specific training

5 single leg RDL variations for pickleball players.

Reaching is something we’re constantly doing in pickleball. Down, low, high, across the body, and often while loading into one leg.

I love incorporating these different reaching patterns into single leg RDLs.

In general, these variations train the same movement but subtle differences change what each one emphasizes.

Understanding those nuances matters when choosing a variation and how it fits into a player’s training.

It’s also a way to keep training fun and interesting while building on a familiar movement pattern.

Why footwork?

It’s the key to every single shot you hit. Before you ever swing, your feet decide whether you’re balanced, in position, and ready. Footwork matters for performance and for injury prevention. Better balance, better positioning, and smoother movement mean better shots and a body that holds up.

October is National Physical Therapy Month!

Grateful for a profession that allows me to combine my love for pickleball with my passion for helping people improve their health and performance.

One of the best parts of this journey has been the people I’ve met and the opportunity to work with players of all levels, from recreational players to professional athletes. I’m especially grateful for the trust these players place in me to help them achieve their goals.

In recognition of National Physical Therapy Month, I wanted to share a little more about what we do.

As Doctors of Physical Therapy, we undergo extensive education and clinical training in anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, and the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions.

Our role goes well beyond treating pain and rehabilitating injuries.

Physical therapists are also trained to identify physical limitations, improve strength and mobility, develop individualized training programs, and support long-term health and physical function.

As a physical therapist specializing in pickleball, this background gives me a unique perspective on the game, particularly when it comes to understanding its physical demands.

From the positions players need to get into, to the mobility, strength, and control required to perform them, these are all things I evaluate and address in my work with players.

Manual therapy is another important part of our skill set that I often incorporate to help restore mobility and function, alongside exercise and training to build the physical capacity needed for the court.

It’s this combination of clinical knowledge, hands-on treatment, rehabilitation, and performance training that makes physical therapy such a valuable profession.

Happy National Physical Therapy Month to all my fellow PTs!

A weekend in New York isn’t complete without checking out the pickleball scene.

Stopped by CityPickle at Times Square and had a great time getting some games in and meeting some awesome people at the facility.

One of the best parts about pickleball is being able to travel somewhere new and instantly connect with people through the sport.

Awesome facility right in the middle of Times Square.

Definitely worth checking out if you’re in NYC.

The GOAT of pickleball, .leigh.waters, just said she spends more time in the gym and doing physical therapy than she does actually on the court.

That should get every pickleball player thinking.

At the highest level, it’s not just about working hard. It’s about taking care of your body so you can continue to perform at a high level year after year.

Strength training helps build the foundation.

But physical therapy, mobility work, and recovery are what help keep the body balanced, resilient, and prepared for the demands of the sport before injuries happen.

The best athletes are proactive with their bodies, not reactive once pain shows up.

That is how you stay on the court.
That is how you continue to perform.
That is how you build longevity in the sport.

Same exercise.
Different standard.

Pickleball specific training that truly carries over to the pickleball court is about more than just doing the exercise.

The little details matter.

Control.
Awareness.
Positions.
Intent.

Small differences in how you perform the movement can completely change what you get out of it.

These are the things that make training actually transfer to your movement, balance, power, and control on court.

These are also the details we really get into when we work together.

And inside The Healthy Pickleballer community on Skool, I break these movements down and teach you what to look for and how to perform them the right way.
