This post brought me memories when I was a kid. While growing up in the youth sports environment, my parents were very supportive and mindful when providing me with feedback about my perforamce. #1: Say, "I love watching you play."
#2: Pick out a specific positive moment from the game that really showed their character.
#3: Ask one question about how the game went.

"That's it. I don't critique them; the kids just want to know you're watching. They want to know you like watching. They don't want you to break the game down and they don't want you to tell them what they should have been doing."
