The dance incorporates elements of other Cuban dances such as Son Cubano, Danzón, Cha Cha, and Afro Cuban Rumba and has come into vogue in recent years among LA and NY style Salsa dancers, with many incorporating the body movement and styling from Cuban salsa into their dancing. SALSAthens and SALSAtlanta classes and performance groups formed in 1999 by Julián Mejía. Julián studied Rueda de Casino in Miami and after moving to Atlanta formed the foremost Casino school in the Atlanta area. SALSAthens was co-founded by Gwyneth Moody, who instructed under Julián from 2004-2006 in Athens, GA. She then went on to form her own Salsa classes and performance group called the Seaside Salseros in St. Simons Island, GA from 2007-2009. After returning to Athens in 2012. Gwyneth co-founded SALSAthens which continues weekly to this day.
