Festival Dance Camp

Festival Dance Camp Summer intense dance program located on the beautiful University of Georgia campus! Students will attend on campus classes in the UGADance Theatre Studios.

Festival dance camp, in its nineteenth year will be held on the beautiful campus of the University of Georgia, in Athens, Georgia. The camp offers a one or two-week intensive dance program, designed to provide high-quality training for the serious-minded dancer. The highly professional faculty will provide an experienced insight into all aspects of dance, understanding of their goals as a dancer a

nd how to achieve them. The beautiful campus of the University of Georgia is located in the north eastern part of the state. Conveniently located in Athens, Georgia, UGA is only a one hour drive from Atlanta. The campus has its own lake, olympic-size swimming pool, tennis courts, movie theatre and fine arts facility. The spacious studios have sprung floors, mirrors, barres and marley flooring. Festival Dance Camp’s curriculum is intensive, requiring a high level of commitment. The in-depth training is designed to provide each student with a strong foundation in Ballet, Pointe, Pas de Deux, Modern, Jazz, and Character, and geared to motivate and challenge each dancer on their own level. The camp is structured for dancers aged eleven through professional. All students are required to have at least one year of Pointe. All classes will be held on campus in the UGA Dance Department Studios. Students will attend two ballet classes daily, in addition they will attend two Jazz, Modern, or Character classes. Evenings will be spent rehearsing, viewing ballet films, listening to lectures on dance and dance history, or free time. Throughout the two weeks, students will have chaperoned opportunities to swim, hike, attend movies, picnics, and other on-campus activities. Festival Dance Camp students will be housed in the privacy of an adult-chaperoned college residence hall. Each room is furnished with two twin beds and private bath facilities. Students may request roommates, or a roommate of the same age will be assigned. Three meals daily are provided in the college dining halls. An essential part of every dancer’s training is stage experience. A performance will be given by all dancers on Saturday, June 30th, at 12 pm, in the UGA Dance Studios Theatre. All parents, relatives, and friends are invited to attend.

Today was the last day for Festival Dance 2019. The dancers experienced phenomenal instruction, new choreography, new friends, stronger ties with old ones, laughter and memories that will last a lifetime. Excited to have DaeSun Cupid with us next week. DaeSun Cupid is a dance teacher, choreographer, performer, and creative director. He was born and raised in Augusta, Georgia where he attended Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School for 7 years. Due to his outstanding achievements and hard work in both the field of dance and stage production, he was able to choreograph and assist with putting numerous dance pieces in front of thousands of patrons. After engaging with local dance for several years such as Pulse Dance Center, Sharon Skepple Mayfield Dance Academy, and the Columbia County Ballet, he decided it was time for a new environment. He is now currently residing in Atlanta where he teaches numerous styles at various dance studios in the area acting as a leader in the local community. His credits include names such as Tiffany Evans, Brax, and Estelita Quintero La Diosa.

FDC is please to have on staff this year Professor Michael Vernon with Indiana University. He started dancing at the Nesta Brooking School of Ballet in London before studying at the Royal Ballet School in London. He performed with the Royal Ballet, the Royal Opera Ballet, and the London Festival Ballet before moving to New York in 1976 to join the Eglevsky Ballet as ballet master and resident choreographer. He became artistic director of the Long Island-based company in 1989 - 1996.
Vernon choreographed numerous ballets for the Eglevsky Ballet, in addition to ballets for many professional companies in the United States and worldwide, such as BalletMet of Columbus, Ohio, and North Carolina Dance Theatre. Mikhail Baryshnikov commissioned him to choreograph the highly successful pas de deux In a Country Garden for American Ballet Theatre (ABT). His solo S'Wonderful was danced by ABT principal Cynthia Harvey in the presence of President and Mrs. Reagan and shown nationwide on CBS television. He also served as assistant choreographer on Ken Russell's movie Valentino, starring Rudolph Nureyev and Leslie Caron.
Vernon has taught at Steps on Broadway (New York City) since 1980, working with dancers from New York City Ballet, ABT, and many other high-profile companies. He is an integral part of the Manhattan Dance Project, which brings New York-style master classes to all regions of the United States. He has been involved with the Ballet Program of the Chautauqua Institute since 1996 and is Artistic Director for the Ballet School of Stamford (Conn). Vernon has been company teacher for American Ballet Theatre, Dance Theatre of Harlem, the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He has guest taught in companies all over the world, including the West Australian Ballet, the National Ballet of China, the Hong Kong Ballet, the Birmingham Royal Ballet, Berlin Ballet, the Royal Swedish Ballet, and the NorwegianBallet. He has been a guest teacher for The Juilliard School and The Joffrey School, and recently joined the panel of judges for the Youth America Grand Prix regional semi-finals.

An essential part of every dancer’s training is stage experience. A performance will be given by all dancers on Saturday, June 20th, at 12 pm, in the UGA Dance Studios Theatre. All parents, relatives, and friends are invited to attend.
