Turkey poults (baby turkeys) have arrived, or will shortly, depending on when a hen started incubating her eggs. Perhaps you’ve seen some already? 🤓 Fun fact: cool, damp weather can be hard on very young poults, so turkey hens protect their poults from hypothermia during rainstorms by fanning out their wings like umbrellas. 🤓 Another fun fact: turkeys take dust baths to protect their skin from parasites.

📌 DEC conducts the Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey each August. Please bookmark this link to participate and help us get a good count of New York State’s Wild Turkey population later this summer: https://on.ny.gov/summerturkeysurvey.

Participation tips:
👍 Keep an eye out for Wild Turkeys as you’re out and about.
👍 When you observe a flock, jot down the number of adult females, adult males, and poults (young of the year) that you see.
👍 Using your computer or smart phone, please enter your observation online at: https://on.ny.gov/summerturkeysurvey.
👍 Please do not double-report a group if you see what you believe to be the same flock later in the month.
👍 Observing and counting wildlife can be challenging. We ask that you only report flocks when you’re confident you observed the entire group. Partial flock observations can lead to inaccurate poult-per-hen estimates. Using binoculars can greatly improve your odds of observing an entire flock.
