Who am I under pressure?
This question sits at the center of performance. Not in moments of comfort, but in moments where the heart rate races, overthinking runs rampant, and the body shakes. In these moments, athletes often assume something has gone wrong. In reality, something has gone right; the brain has detected a potential threat. Fear is not a flaw in the system. It is the system.

This is where the “in the moment when” question, “Who am I?” becomes practical. You are the product of what you have repeatedly done in moments of discomfort.

Recognize the signal with context.
• “This is activation.”
• “My system is preparing.”
Creates separation between sensation and interpretation. Reducing reactivity.

How the Journey Began:

When I first began writing the Concept of Adaptive Performance State (APS), it was never intended to be a personal story, let alone a published book. It started simply as a manuscript, a thesis for a Master’s program that was ultimately terminated during the COVID pandemic. My abstract had been approved, and I was ready to formalize what I had long practiced as a coach: a philosophy of human performance grounded in self-awareness, adaptability, and emotional regulation.

Preface - No Junk Reps

Our world is changing more rapidly and relentlessly than ever before in human history. Technology, information, and artificial intelligence keep transforming how we learn, communicate, and act. As external changes speed up, we must also accelerate our ability to recognize these shifts and adapt accordingly. When we fail to keep up with change, it creates a familiar yet unsettling feeling: the situation has changed, but I did not.

No Junk Reps was written to address that gap.

Whether you're a young athlete striving to perform at a higher level, or a coach, parent, or mentor supporting that journey, the modern performance landscape is louder and more demanding than ever. Distractions are constant. Information is endless. Expectations are amplified. What athletes need isn't more noise, but greater awareness, presence, and readiness. This book offers structure, language, and practical strategies to help individuals quiet their minds, focus their attention, and respond with composure under pressure.

At the core of performance, whether in sport or life, is the ability to manage oneself in real time. A calm, organized mind enhances emotional regulation and creates access to an Optimal Performance State. When unnecessary mental “tabs” are closed, present-moment focus sharpens, decision-making improves, and the athlete reconnects with the task rather than the outcome. Performance becomes less reactive and more intentional.

One principle guides all of my coaching:

“Every outcome is the correct outcome for the process applied.”

This is not a passive statement or an excuse for underperformance. It is a conviction that outcomes provide information. They reflect the quality of preparation, decision-making, adaptability, and ex*****on, not personal worth. Before athletes can fully engage with the Adaptive Performance State framework, they must first accept responsibility for the process they bring into each moment. Only then can meaningful growth occur.

As a performance coach working across multiple sports, especially at the elite level of golf, I have learned that technical skill alone is never the limiting factor. Human behavior is. If coaching were as simple as reading thoughts and emotions on a visible screen, the work would be straightforward. Instead, we must interpret the story being told through posture, tempo, movement patterns, and emotional responses. The body never lies; it reveals capacity, resilience, and adaptability.

Every challenge carries a load. Every athlete brings a certain capacity to meet that load. Outcomes are emotionally charged because context matters, but problems arise when we inflate the importance of results that, once in motion, are largely outside our control. In those moments, adaptability decreases, conviction wavers, and agency is lost. The athlete begins to chase outcomes instead of focusing on executing processes.

Understanding how skills are learned, refined, and expressed under pressure is central to solving this problem. The Adaptive Performance State framework organizes performance development into three interconnected settings: Learning, Training, and Performing. Each environment requires a different balance of conscious control and subconscious ex*****on. Skill acquisition is not linear; it is cyclical, contextual, and adaptive. Through deliberate repetition, feedback, and reflection, fragile movements evolve into automatic, resilient behaviors capable of withstanding competitive stress. This framework is grounded in neuroscience and motor learning science, but its application is practical. The goal is not perfection; it is competence, confidence, and consistency in unpredictable environments. As cognitive load decreases and pattern recognition strengthens, athletes gain the ability to adapt rather than react.

Importantly, the purpose of No Junk Reps is not to reduce the demands placed on athletes. Pressure is inevitable. Resistance is unavoidable. Instead, this work is about expanding internal capacity, developing emotional regulation, strengthening self-awareness, and aligning default responses with the realities of competition and life. When capacity grows, readiness follows. When readiness improves, performance becomes more reliable.

Ultimately, this book is about building the skills required to access an Optimal Performance State more often, not by forcing outcomes, but by refining the processes that create them. Through awareness, presence, adaptation, and conviction, athletes can close the gap between intention and ex*****on and learn to trust their work when it matters most.

Sincerely,

Gary Wise
