The Aspen Snowmass Nordic Trail System offers trail users over 90 kilometers of free cross country ski and snowshoe trails, connecting the communities of Aspen, Snowmass and Basalt.

Upper Rio Grande Trail (Stein Park to post office) will be closed today for plowing. City crews will try to keep it clear of snow for the rest of the season.

It was an amazing day for a race. Although the Owl Creek Chase didn't take place on Owl Creek this year due to some visiting moose, the reroute didn't disappoint! Thanks to all the racers, the volunteers, and timing officials for making it happen. And let's not forget Red Mountain Grill for providing us with an amazing lunch and the incredibly hard working Parks and grooming team for laying down an amazing course. We will see you again next year!

Don't let the forecast for high winds scare you - the trails are in great shape, and certain areas such as Trail 20 on the Moore Open Space are surprisingly sheltered!

Last nights storm was just what we needed! Our amazing crew was out most of the day rolling trails around Aspen.

You might notice that the trail looks a little variable and rough in the photo, and we thought we would give you a little insight into what it takes to build the XC ski trails. This is the first post in Grooming 101.

Rolling: This is the first step in establishing our Nordic trail system. Basically we drag a big and heavy plastic drum around the trails and knock the air out of the snowpack. Our groomers go around and around until all the snow is packed down. We typically let it set up for a day or more, and then if we're lucky, we can take out our next tool to smooth it down even more.

It will take us a few more days (...and hopefully another few good storms) to set the trails with perfect corduroy and classic tracks.

Thanks for your patience as we work to get everything going during this early season transition! ..and stay tuned, we will continue with a few more updates on Grooming 101 in the coming days and weeks.

FIRST! With the latest storm rolling through, the team was able to get out yesterday on the upper and lower Moore fields. Let’s have a great season!

This Sunday February 20, Ski For The Pass takes place at 10am at the HWY 82 winter closure gate east of Aspen. This stunningly beautiful 7K ski is race number five in the six event Aspen Nordic Cup Series as well as a fundraiser for The Independence Pass Foundation. March 29: We are nearing the end of our Nordic ski season. We will still groom the High School loop 30, South side of Snowmass Golf loop 60, Owl Creek Trail and Northstar as conditions allow. Variable spring snow conditions, areas with little or no snow, ski with caution. Please respect private property and stay on marked trails - no crust skiing on Owl Creek Trail. Thank you!

Reminder: the Aspen Cross-Country Center has closed for the season.
