President’s Message
Much has been written and said about the consequences of the passage of Measure 114. We have already seen the fallout at our Club with significantly increased applications for membership. I have personally contacted Sheriff Sickler and Chief O’Meara of Ashland and offered the full support of our club, particularly in the area of classes and training facilities. I have also spoken with the president of the White City range and we are in complete agreement to cooperate in the assistance to law- enforcement agencies.
As a county commissioner I’ve had several discussions with county counsel and the Sheriff. This is a poorly written law or, as our county counsel said, it is “a law that was written in the basement of a church in Portland.” My suggestion is we all keep our powder dry as it will be difficult to predict the implementation of this law and we can expect numerous legal challenges. The best we can do right now is support our law-enforcement officials and our shooting community.

Alert – No Rebar Stands in Bays F & J: Our investigation led us to believe that the “tracer bullet” that started the fire ricocheted off a rebar target stand in the multi- purpose J bay. The Oregon Department of Forestry concurs with this assessment. Because of the fire danger, we have removed rebar stands from both bays F and J (tactical and multi-purpose bays). We repurposed some old wood archery stands as a temporary measure, and a member graciously provided some of his homemade wood stands. The club has ordered bases for wood stands which we will install as soon as possible. For now, rebar stands are still allowed in the two pistol bays, but please DO NOT take a rebar stand from a pistol bay and move it to the tactical or multi-purpose bays. The Board will continue to evaluate the situation and advise you of any change in policy.

Caution – Tracer Ammo Not Easy to Identify: Tracer ammo is NEVER allowed at AGAC. A recent event shows it can be very difficult to know if you have ammo with tracer material.
We had a small grass fire recently behind the 50 yard enclosed bay. Thanks to members who called it in and a fast response from three fire departments, it was quickly extinguished and burned no more than a quarter acre. Oregon Department of Forestry investigated the cause, and the board conducted its own internal investigation, reviewing sign-in sheets, gate entry records and our security camera video. After several hours of watching the video, Bill Longiotti saw a suspicious “light colored object” that rose up and then fell back to earth right after a shot was fired, and just prior to seeing smoke. He was able to record the video on a thumb drive and play it at super slow motion. At that point, several board members could see something very “bright” rise up in the air and come back down where the fire started.
The member shooting at the time cooperated and gave us samples of the ammo being used. Bill then cut the ammo open and found both a tracer round and tracer material. A copy of Bill’s work is included on pages 5 and 6 of this newsletter. Do not cut open ammo like this; the material ignited as described in Bill’s report. Note that almost all of the tracer marking on the bullet has been worn off or maybe removed in the cleaning process.
We are not saying all 300 blackout ammo contains tracer material, or that other brands do not contain such material. But do your homework and avoid using remanufactured military ammo at our ranges. Remanufactured military ammo may not have the markings that indicate tracer ammo. If you use ammo with tracer material, even unknowingly, and it starts a fire, you will be fined by the responding fire agencies. Also, tracer ammo is illegal in grassy or forested areas.

President’s Message
Please note the article below on our upcoming Open House on July 10th. While we will be inviting the community, this is first and foremost a party for ourselves. We’ve seen tremendous growth and change in our club over the last few years and I think it’s time we celebrated. With the many events, it should be a great family and member time. Dennis Toohey has done a wonderful job setting this up with many volunteers. However, he’s going to need a lot of help to make our party a success so please contact him and volunteer!

President’s Message
Great to see that with the wonderful weather folks are getting out more often to
shoot. I know that we all hope the ammunition situation improves soon so we can
get out even more often. For next year we are still looking for a president, a secretary,
a treasurer, and a membership director. These are obviously key positions and if you
don’t want to step forward I would ask you to think about someone who would be
good for these positions and do some recruiting.
We are moving forward with what I believe will be a wonderful day for our
membership and the community on July 10th, an open house, swap meet and
barbecue. Dennis Toohey has stepped forward to lead this effort as have several
other members. This will be a big job that, to be successful, will require many a
helping hand so if you’re interested, please contact Dennis at 707-362-6034

Happy Easter to you all. Please remember that the range will be closed Easter Sunday per our lease agreement!

President’s Message
Tremendous news! The City of Ashland has renewed our lease through 2032 with no changes in our current status. This is a great vote of confidence as the City Council unanimously renewed the lease without debate. It is a testament to, and I want to thank, Gary Peterson, Bill Longiotti, and Bob Smoot for their efforts in maintaining a great working relationship with City staff. The staff, including the chief of police, the public works director and the city attorney, all turned in strong recommendations for renewal. I think you, the members of our club, should also pat yourself on the back because when I had each of the city councilors out for a tour they saw that you maintain a clean, SAFE, family-friendly facility.
We have two significant opportunities for volunteering. First, I continue to ask for someone to step forward to take over as membership director. This is an incredibly important, behind-the-scenes job without which the Club cannot function. Secondly, we are planning a community open house on July 10th and will be looking for someone or a group to ramrod the event. The concept is that we will open the entire range for the day to the public and all our venues will be open for viewing and auditioning. This will also be an opportunity for you to try out a shooting sport that may interest you. We are contemplating throwing a party with a barbecue so everything is on the table. If you would like to take this on please let a board member
know.

Spring Clean Up Day!
Our annual spring clean up day is scheduled for May 8th. This is a good way to get some volunteer hours in to reduce your annual membership dues for next year. Work starts at 8 am and we hope to be done by early afternoon. We need folks who are willing to get dirty and help clean up the place. Bring a w**d whacker, blower, rake, etc. Don’t forget gloves. We hope to see you all there.

President’s Message
We are going to see big changes in the leadership of our club at the end of the year that I need to make you aware of.
For the last several years Jeanne and Gary Peterson have provided incredible service to our Club. From the great relationship we have with the Ashland city staff and police department to the new digital membership process to the webpage to membership services to the new shotgun range to the successful outcome of our lawsuit they have been key contributors to the success of our great Club. However, unfortunately, just as all good things must come to an end they have decided to move on and they will be missed. We will be looking for replacements for the Secretary, Treasurer, Website Master, and Membership Director positions over the next year and I would encourage anyone with these skill sets to consider stepping forward.
Additionally, I have decided it is time for me to step down as president of the Club. I want to concentrate on my role as a county commissioner because there’s far too many things not going well in our State and community. One of the reasons I decided to stay on after the election was because I believe I have a good relationship with the Ashland City Council members and I felt obligated to stay through the renewal of our lease. I’m also a firm believer in term limits and bringing in new blood. It’s time for someone else with fresh ideas and new leadership to step forward. If you’re interested in any of these positions please let me know.
