Five hikers enjoyed the sunset and dusk on Solstice Eve in the Douglas County Wildlife Area near Solon Springs. Teresa Nelson reports "It was an absolutely picture perfect evening. I should’ve taken pics of the sunset and clouds. It was beautiful. The moon was bright and beautiful too." The group met a deer and also saw four beavers swimming near the Rovers Lake campsite. Teresa notes the lake is extremely low due to the recent dry seasons, and access to water from the trail and campsite is difficult.

Chequamegon Chapter Volunteers Return to Nelson Lake
to Complete New Backpacker Campsite

By Kevin Schram

On Saturday, June 13, 2026, Chequamegon Chapter Volunteers returned to the Nelson Lake Backpacker Campsite to finish construction started in May. Ellie Williams, Kristin Dahl, Kris Wegerson, Mark Belknap, Ed Ronkowski, Rhiannon Harmon, and Kevin Schram built campsite trails from the three tent pads to the cooking area and from the cooking area to Nelson Lake.

Afterward, we had lunch at the recently completed Lake Owen Backpacker Campsite where we met a backpacker from Fond Du Lac. He was grateful for the nice campsite and our company.

The weather was perfect; the bugs were tolerable and we all enjoyed working together in the woods.
