Those who know us know that we are rabid tarpon fans. So when we got the chance to travel to Tarpon Cay Lodge, a Sage Experiences outfitter, and put the new Sage SIGNAL through its paces in one of the world’s great juvenile tarpon fisheries, we jumped at it.

Fast shots, violent eats, airborne fish and the kind of fishing that makes it hard to ever call it a day. A special place, a fish we never tire of chasing and an ideal setting to send a SIGNAL.

When the wind blows, the rain hits you sideways and the clouds look as though they would prefer to make you a tasty snack, you find out quickly what matters most. The world’s finest fly fishing equipment. Guides working three times harder than they would on a bluebird day. Great people. And a place wild enough to remind you that none of us are really in control.

We recently brought the newest rod in the fleet, the SAGE Signal, and the gorgeous new ENFORCER Sea Smoke colorway to Beh Kay Lodge, our newest Sage Experiences outfitter in Mexico’s Espiritu Santo Bay. The weather did what the weather will do, but the equipment was made for the occasion and built to meet the demands of saltwater anglers traveling thousands of miles to meet the fish of their dreams.

Through it all, the Beh Kay guides and hosts shone, and the wild magnificence of Espiritu Santo Bay kept us on our toes. Great company and some of the finest food we have ever enjoyed at a lodge were the icing on the cake of a week we will not soon forget.

After 25 years of working with Christmas Island Outfitters, we know exactly what sets this program apart. It starts with a locally owned operation rooted in the history and people of Christmas Island. It continues with a small, highly experienced guide team that has spent decades walking these flats, and an ideal home base set right on the beach, on the ocean side of the island, just minutes from town and the boat basin.

Fishing with Bill - A Lifetime of Fishing with my Father by Ken Morrish

Father’s Day is a celebration of the dads who introduced us to the outdoors, instilled a love of fly fishing, and helped shape who we become. In the reflections below, Fly Water Travel co-founder Ken Morrish looks back on a lifetime spent fishing, exploring, and occasionally enduring a few precarious days on the water with his father, Bill.

Part 1: The Long Way Through Patagonia

“Yet there I was, with a fresh cup of Mate passing around the cab, my fishing partner Mike riding shotgun, and hundreds of miles of Patagonia stretching out ahead of us. Over the next three weeks, I would cross international borders, visit six lodges, fish in two countries, and chase four species across some of the most storied water in the Southern Hemisphere.”

What Kind of Sickness is This?

“My knees go weak and I wait for my brain to send the message to my legs to move. We bolt downstream after her, boots slipping on rocks, breath short, as she tears around the bend.“
