Triple R. went one for two this morning . My new pup Red-ee at 10 months old now got to show me some of her developed tracking skills with the recovery of this nice late season buck . The buck was shot yesterday evening with a shotgun slug by a buddy of my grandson Kash . After the shot. It ran out in a cut bean field then stopped hunched up for a long time. Before moving really slow and exiting the field. Into a timber. His buddy took a short video. Of the buck just standing there . Kash advised his buddy he thought it was a liver shot and said it would be best to wait til morning to go after him not wanting to risk jumping him up and leaving the property, and take a chance on coyote damage. I agreed with Kash and told him I would meet him early in the morning with the dogs. I decided to let Kash run Red-ee on the track . It was 14 degrees with a brisk wind making it a little chilly , so I put a coat, that has a built in harness on her for warmth . So we started Red-ee in the general area of where the hunter thought he was when shot , and let her do a search . It wasn’t long before she locked on to the scent she liked and showed us one drop of blood , the only one on the entire track . She worked her way across the field like an old pro finding the buck at 200+ yards in its first bed .
The coyotes had found it sometime through the night and did sonificant damage to it. I advised the guys to be careful with its antlers , this time of year they can fall off at any time, while we moved it a short distance to get pictures. After all the pictures were taken , the hunter lifted the head for one last look and one antler fell off. The coyotes got the meat and the hunter got a nice trophy , and Red-ee got a “that a boy “ for a nice job .
Our second track of the day was a leg shoulder hit shot on a doe last night . They jumped it a hour after the shot . It ran into a wooded subdivision with really nice houses . So that’s when they called me , I told them I would come in the morning after the first track. I ran Ruff on this one and it turned out a no recovering. We were tracking across peoples yards. Where we could get permission people let there dogs out when we were tracking , it turned into a hassle. So we finally called it . Tracks have been slow so I was glad to get the calls . It all ends tomorrow and we expect very frigid conditions so there probably won’t be many calls if any . I will post Red-ee’s track when I have. More time.
