In 1927, a public Donald Ross course was a radical idea.

Ross was a Hall of Fame architect and he mostly designed for the private game. However, he laid Muni out for working people. It opened as one of the first public golf courses in North Carolina, and almost a hundred years later it is still doing the job it was built to do.

There is a bench on the back nine that your neighbors paid for.

Friends of Asheville Muni funded new benches at several back-nine tees at the Muni, and a full renovation of the back-nine restroom. It is not glamorous work. That is exactly the point. These are the things that make a public round more comfortable for everyone who plays.

The Biltmore Championship comes to Asheville next week. Here is how you can turn that into money for the Muni.

Friends of Asheville Muni is a participating charity in Birdies for Charity. You guess how many birdies the field makes during the tournament, give $20 or more, and 100 percent of it comes to us. There is a $50,000 bonus pool split among the charities on top of that, and whoever guesses closest without going over wins the Ultimate Biltmore Experience.

Donations close Wednesday, September 16 at 5:00 PM.

You may have noticed we look different this week.

The bear and the ridgeline are new. What they stand for is not. Friends of Asheville Muni has been funding projects at Asheville's public course for years, quietly, and next year that course turns 100. It opened in 1927 as a Donald Ross design built for working people, the first public golf course in North Carolina, and it has stayed open to everyone ever since.

We did not update how we look to celebrate the last hundred years. We did it because we are getting ready for the next hundred, and because people should know who we are before we ask them for anything.

The 66th Annual Skyview Golf Tournament is September 21 and 22, and early registration closes this Friday.

The Skyview tournament was first played at Asheville Muni in 1959 and has been part of this course's story ever since. This year it is at the Country Club of Asheville, the second straight year away from the Muni while the front nine is out of play after Helene.

The Skyview Golf Association runs this tournament. Friends of Asheville Muni is just proud to help get the word out.

A $5,000 gift from the City of Asheville turned into a $10,000 pollinator garden.

The City of Asheville matched it in full through a Neighborhood Matching Grant, and the money went into a native perennial slope at the Muni. That is what a small volunteer group can do when it has members behind it. Show up with real money, and it doubles.

Friends of Asheville Muni is the nonprofit that funds this work at Asheville's public course. Membership is $50 a year.

Thanks to everyone who spent their Saturday morning laying cardboard and mulch at Muni!

This is how habitat actually gets made. Not with a grant announcement, with a wheelbarrow. The wildflower area is healthier this morning than it was Friday and every living thing in the area will benefit from this.

Thank you to everyone who turned out. Friends of Asheville Muni is the volunteer nonprofit that organizes and funds this work, and joining costs $50 a year.

The City of Asheville owns the Muni. Commonwealth Golf Partners runs it. Friends of Asheville Muni funds the projects that make it thrive.

Three different groups, and we get mistaken for the other two constantly. So, plainly: we are an all-volunteer 501(c)(3). We do not set green fees, book tee times, or employ anyone. We raise money from neighbors and we put it into this course.

This Saturday morning we are spreading mulch at Muni.

We need to spread some mulch around the course and you get to spend time with some great people on a Saturday morning. It is straightforward work and it moves fast with enough people.

No golf required, no experience required. Bring gloves and water. Friends of Asheville Muni will be there with everything else!
