We were honored to receive $5,000 in support of the Waypoint Accelerator Program from Bank OZK during the grand opening of their new Merrimon Ave. location in Asheville. This investment will help us continue working alongside early-stage outdoor businesses as they grow and navigate what’s next.

We appreciate partners who are committed to strengthening the small business community in Western North Carolina. Thank you to the Bank OZK team!

We had a blast at The Mule at Devil's Foot Beverage yesterday for their WNC Outdoor Film Fest! Thanks for the support and enjoying our films as a warmup to FCNC's feature, "A Dream for the Future" (which is incredible by the way...go watch it!)

BIG THANKS to the crew at Devil's Foot/The Mule!

FCNC staffers had so much fun yesterday at their WNC Outdoor Film Fest, hanging out with folks from our partner organizations and supporters who care about the outdoors and conservation.

Several very cool films by the teams at MADE X MTNS and The G5 Trail Collective got the audience warmed up for a showing of our 30th anniversary documentary "A Dream for the Future." And we got to enjoy several flavors of Devil's Foot Beverage Co. N/A sodas. We call that a win!

We're very proud of this film, and plan to share it at a variety of locations across our 8-county service area throughout the year. If you have a favorite local spot that would be a great fit for a screening, reach out to Katherine Ehrlichman, Marketing and Development Director ([email protected])

And if you're planning a special event, we can't say enough about the incredible space at The Mule. Indoors or outdoors, it was a delight to spend time there!

This week, we celebrated the graduation of the Waypoint Resilience Program's second cohort! Thirteen WNC outdoor businesses have spent the past eight weeks together, fortifying their operational systems, exploring financial frameworks, learning new and innovative marketing pathways, discerning core values and reflecting on team building processes and company cultures.

This cohort is reimagining what's next for WNC's outdoor economy: The Lazy Tiger Hostel, Wunderland Resort, MTN Wellness & Physical Therapy, Run2Run Gear, Cactus to Pine Goods, Resting Point Farms, Adventure Center of Asheville, Gravelo Workshop, Earthshine Lodge, Green Flash Watersports, Wai Mauna SUP Tours, Headwaters Outfitters Outdoor Adventures, and Cornerstone Therapeutic Horsemanship.

The collaborative mindset and instant camaraderie between entrepreneurs is the wind beneath the wings of this program and our local outdoor industry.

Thanks to all participating businesses, facilitators, coaches, program collaborators, the NC Outdoor Economy Office and Outdoor Business Alliance, and to supporters, including the Appalachia Funders Network and North Carolina Community Foundation.

It truly takes a village to build a thriving outdoor community, and it makes a difference when the village shows up.

It has been a great week at the Visit North Carolina Tourism Conference! We had a blast kicking things off at the Outdoor NC hands-on pre-conference event, held in Old Fort. It was an honor to join our colleagues from Uproar Concept, The North Carolina Outdoor Economy Office, Destination McDowell, Camp Grier and The G5 Trail Collective in a panel discussion and activation that explored how connections, community and partnership building can strengthen brands, cultivate and grow destination stewardship efforts, and create transformative opportunities for travelers and locals alike. We did a little trail work to give back to the community and finished the day enjoying well earned local beverages and snacks at Foothills Watershed. Thanks so much to our wonderful partners for having us!

Today's program was highlighted by a wonderful visit from Governor Josh Stein and Secretary of Commerce, Lee Lilley. As both spoke, it was wonderful to hear how outdoor recreation experiences, particularly those curated by our local guides and outfitters, have shaped their core memories, particularly as Governor Stein and Anna Stein, First Lady of North Carolina
WNC. Our state's $17.8 billion outdoor economy continues to be a core driver of prosperity, community health and quality of life, and it is a key reason is the 5th most visited state in the nation!

We've had wonderful conversations with partners about what's next for our , and what we're excited to see in WNC this year and beyond!

An important update from our partners at the NC Outdoor Economy Office and Outdoor Recreation Roundtable:
The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) has released its latest economic data exhibiting outdoor recreation’s essential economic impact on North Carolina’s economy. According to the latest data from the BEA Outdoor Recreation Satellite Account, outdoor recreation created $17.8 billion in value added for North Carolina, accounted for 2.1% of North Carolina’s GDP and included 155,462 jobs in 2024. According to newly revised data in this year’s release, the outdoor recreation economy in North Carolina has grown 4.3% since 2023.

“The latest data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis reinforces what communities across North Carolina already know—outdoor recreation is a powerful driver of economic growth and community vibrancy,” said Amy Allison, Director of the NC Outdoor Economy Office. “From the mountains to the coast, this $17.8 billion sector is not only strengthening our state’s economy—it’s helping rural communities thrive, attracting talent to our state, supporting small businesses and reinforcing the quality of life that makes North Carolina such a special place to live, work, and explore.”

According to Outdoor Recreation Roundtable, at a national level, these new figures showed continued year-over-year growth in the outdoor recreation economy, generating $1.3 trillion in economic output (2.4% of GDP), comprising 3.2% of U.S. employees and accounting for 5.2 million jobs in 2024. The outdoor recreation economy continues to surpass industries such as farming, mining, and utilities. Similarly in North Carolina, the current data shows growth in all categories of value added, employment, and rates of compensation.

North Carolina has maintained its year-over-year strength in core outdoor recreation sectors, supported by an interconnected network of land management, economic development, entrepreneurial support, business alliances, conservation, tourism, user group advocacy and more. This current data release marks the year that included the onset of Hurricane Helene and its devastating immediate impacts, and the beginning of the region’s long-term recovery. The benefit of this pre-Helene data is that it provides a baseline to measure the storm’s lasting impact.

The consistency of these annual reports, despite the short and long term challenges of a significant natural disaster, signals a clear and continual return on investing in our natural spaces, and their necessity for public health and wellbeing. It also shows how vital it is to have strong networks of stewardship, infrastructure management and business support in place to ensure our outdoor spaces are effectively managed and repaired in times of crisis, while also supporting continued entrepreneurship, small business growth, and workforce quality of life. Communities across North Carolina are leaning on their outdoor assets to continue to tell stories of resilience, and to look toward a promising future.

Over 90 folks from across the region, representing city, county & state government agencies, COGs, TDAs, federal and state land managers, economic developers, land trusts, stewardship organizations, local and national funders, outdoor businesses and more kicked off the week at Trailside Brewing at Lennox Station in Hendersonville for our WNC Regional Gathering, held jointly between MADE X MTNS' Building Outdoor Communities program, Great Trails NC and Ecusta Trail.

The energy was incredible and it was a powerful room of movers and shakers in the WNC's outdoor economy. It was our first opportunity to celebrate the incredible success of the past 4 years of "Accelerating Outdoors", and let folks know our priorities moving forward. We also hosted productive breakout discussions on regional connectivity, long-term recovery and resilience, stewardship and maintenance needs, and blueways and paddle trails.

We introduced the room to our partnership with the Trust for Public Land Appalachia United Outdoors program, and the team leading this exciting work in our region.

Thank you to Trailside Brewing Company, Ecusta Market and Cafe, the Great Trails State Coalition, Friends of Ecusta Trail, Henderson County, NC Department of Commerce, NC State Parks, Recreation Resources Service, and U.S. Forest Service - National Forests in North Carolina for the support and sharing resources and information! Thank you to our awesome breakout group facilitators, and to the outdoor activity leaders: Outdoor Business Alliance, Carolina Climbers Coalition, Cognative MTB, McDowell Tech Trail School, Venture Ecusta and Friends of DuPont Forest.

We're looking forward to many more of these collaborative convening events as we move forward!
