You're walking through a parking lot at night when someone suddenly gets aggressive and in your personal space. Your heart starts racing, and you’re left wondering: how do I handle this without making things much worse?

At Kore Self Defense, we teach that the best victory is often the one where you don't have to fight at all. Here’s a simple strategy for handling an agitated person safely:

:one: Don’t square up. If you face them directly with your body squared at their chest, you are signaling a challenge to fight. You want to avoid that signal at all costs.

:two: Use open body language. Instead, turn slightly away and keep one foot back. This subtly sends the message: "I’m not looking for trouble, and I am ready to leave."

:three: Stay ready—don't put your hands in your pockets! While your posture says de-escalation, your hands should remain available to block or grab if they launch an attack. In our training, we show how even a simple bicep grab can give you control if things go south.

This balance of non-aggressive posture and physical readiness is key to navigating high-tension moments.

A resident just fell victim to a sophisticated jury duty scam—one phone call from someone impersonating a Loudoun County deputy was enough to manipulate them and steal their money. 📞💸

Ireland—you were absolutely unforgettable! 🇮🇪✨

I just wrapped up an incredible Instructor Update weekend training with the amazing Aidan Ahmet, and my heart is full. Every single second on the mats was pure energy, intensive technique work, and profound growth for everyone involved. There is nothing like being pushed by world-class instruction to remind you why this journey matters.

But beyond the physical training itself, the human connections made this weekend were truly special. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside such dedicated individuals—meeting so many new faces in the community was a highlight I won’t soon forget. Thank you all for welcoming me into your space with such open arms and shared passion! 🙌🥋

If you’ve ever been in a physical confrontation, you know that gravity is often your worst enemy. Being forced to the ground is a critical moment—the absolute worst place for most people to be during an attack.

When you’re on your back, the danger increases exponentially. You are vulnerable to kicks and stomps, which carry tremendous force even without much technique from the attacker. It’s easy to feel trapped, but you aren't powerless.

One effective recovery technique involves a concept similar to yoga’s candlestick pose. By rolling back onto your shoulders and explosively driving your legs toward your attacker, you accomplish three vital things:

1️⃣ Create distance between you and their feet.
2️⃣ Off-balance them with the momentum of your movement.
3️⃣ Open up your window to scramble back onto your feet quickly.

Don’t accept the ground as a permanent residence during a fight. Use motion to reclaim your position of strength and get back into the fight where you belong.
