Did you know that trying new things keeps you young? Back in the early 2000's a huge study was done with thousands of centennials from all over the world. They were trying to identify common lifestyle factors they could attribute to why they were all living so long. They were expecting to find some dietary element, or a physical activity correlation, but what they found instead was that they all said they had been on a journey of life-long learning. One lady was 105 and had picked up playing the violin. Another man was 102 and decided to learn sign language. When you learn new things you open up new portals in the brain. An active mind translates into a reduction of stress and therefore less disease. Challenge yourself to never stop learning, and you'll set yourself up for a life that's not only rich but longer too!

Is your movement practice mindful or mindless?

Do you drone out at the gym, headphones in, gaze on the TV screen, autopilot engaged while you cruise on the treadmill? When we move with intention, we activate a mind-body synergy that exponentializes the training effects. Without this collaboration, we fail to capitalize on the true potential a movement practice has to offer. Like a martial artist performing a karate kata, you can choose to be present in your training and turn your mundane, superficial workout into rich experience. Here are some tips to try:

·Turn off the music and focus instead on the sound and cadence of your breath

·Move away from the mirror and try closing your eyes to activate your proprioception instead of relying on visual feedback

·Practice the strategy of visualization; see yourself performing the movement with perfect technique prior to each new exercise

·Recite a mental mantra throughout your training session

·Get out of the gym (and off the machines) and train outside in the elements

We recently ran an informal survey asking people what the biggest obstacles to sticking with a fitness program were. Many answered that accountability was a major factor. Having a workout buddy has been shown by numerous university studies to greatly reduce drop-off rate. When you train with a partner, it helps keep you engaged, encouraged and on track. Together, you’ll celebrate your successes, work through challenges, and enjoy the journey of life-long fitness with a friend.
