Everyone Meet Erich Mietenkorte, the 10 time NRA High-Power Rifle Silhouette National Champion, 4th consecutive NRA Grand Aggregate National Title holder, and new dad!
Where are you from?
Being the son of an Army Veteran, I was born on Fort Lewis (joint base Lewis-McChord) and grew up in Yelm, Washington. After graduating high school I attended Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA and have stayed in Central Washington since, currently living in Ephrata.
What discipline do you shoot?
Smallbore and High-power Rifle Silhouette.
How long have you been shooting?
My passion for shooting started at five when my dad introduced me to his Feinwerkbau 150 air rifle. With his guidance and later, time spent at the range with my brother Peter, I honed my skills and developed a deep love for shooting. This foundation led to my competitive shooting career beginning in 2014.
Do you shoot anything else beyond your discipline? IE hunting, pistol/shotgun, etc.
If it has a trigger, I'll give it a go! I’ve had success in bullseye pistol, lever action silhouette, and indoor position rifle shooting. I can also say for a fact that the varmints around my place are definitely not fans of Benchmark Barrels.
What’s something interesting about you?
I enjoy building my own competition rifles. Getting a barrel perfectly dialed in on my lathe then machining and chambering it to my exact specifications is very satisfying.
When you’re not shooting what do you like to do?
When I’m not shooting, I teach. I've been the music teacher at Royal High School for the past 14 years which has been incredibly rewarding. Traveling with my wife and son is another passion of mine, as it allows us to create unforgettable memories together.
Erich’s Tip for new shooters
Rifle silhouette can be a challenging discipline and is at times very humbling. It is important to not get discouraged if your first time out doesn’t go the way you think it should. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or for help. Just remember to have fun and make new friends
