Four-year-olds are honest about everything.

They'll tell you they're scared. They'll tell you they want their mom. They'll also, about eleven minutes into a Little Ninja class, forget they were ever nervous and start yelling YES I CAN louder than the eight-year-olds.

Little Ninja Confidence Adventure runs at 11:30 on September 19. Obstacle course, listening games, stranger safety basics. They break a board too. Theirs are a little smaller.

Ages 4 and 5. Fifteen spots, and this one fills first.

"He just won't speak up."

I hear some version of that on the phone almost every week. Sometimes it's "she's so shy." Sometimes it's "he lets other kids take his stuff and he doesn't say anything."

Here's what I've learned in twenty-plus years. Most parents think confidence is something a kid either has or doesn't. It's closer to a skill. It gets built, slowly, in a room where nobody laughs when you fall.

The board is pine. It's about an inch thick. A seven-year-old can break it.

That's not the point.

The point is the four seconds before. The kid looks at the board, looks at me, and decides. Some of them go on the first try. Some need three. The ones who need three are usually the ones whose parents tear up.
