Your calendar tells the truth your goals won’t.
Your results in 2026 won’t come from motivation—
they’ll come from what you protect when no one is watching.”

Alright, you trained, you showed up, and fought through to the finish line!
But now your medals are on the shelf, your legs are recovering… and you're probably thinking:
"What's next for me?"
"Did I really give it my all this season?"
"How can I keep this momentum going without totally burning out?"
That "in-between" time right after your main race season is where a lot of runners get a bit stuck. They either just kind of drift, or they jump into another race without a real plan.

But guess what? There's a smarter way to do this.
Right now is the perfect time to reflect back and review the past season. I’m going to impose a few prompts and I want you to reflect and I also want to encourage you to generate a reply to each of these. It can be brief or elaborate, whatever you’re feeling at the moment, but get it off your chest or shout it to me enthusiastically. Either way, it’s healthy to do this.

Here we go:

What are 1-3 Personal or Performance WINS you had this past season?

What do you feel really worked well for you this past season?

What are 1-3 things that you learned this season?

Name one thing you want to stop doing that’s not been serving you well?
Name one thing that has worked and you want to continue doing?
Name one thing you would like to start doing?

So with all of that, I’ll cap the questions to this point. Before I even lead the conversation to “what’s next” which I am sure many of you have tumbled through emotions and wishful thinking, I know this step is critical to making great future decisions. As your coach/guide/resource in this space, I know this will be a critical step in your journey towards personal growth.

My approach to helping runners "stay in the game" after 50:
1. Make sure there are generally 1-2 easy days between interval/tempo sessions and/or long run. This often means 1 session and a session long per week, or extending the 7 day cycle.
2. Make sure recovery days are LOW power, and total load of recovery runs is under 90% of the past 6 week average (CTL) .
3. Do strength and mobility consistently.
4. Ensure enough sleep
5. Get enough calories in prior and right after a session or long, as well in the 24 hrs after. If you stay healthy, but plateau in pace, this might be something of an oversight.
6. Resist the urge to run everything 1-2% over the top of range prescribed. Old habits die hard.
7. Substitute one cross-train day (often with swim or bike/trainer) instead of an easy run per week.
8. Take one day per week (or at least every 10 days) completely off. Maybe mobility work, but nothing else. Rest.
9. Keep chronic training load ramp rate to < = 3 TSS or RSS / week. (aka, no sudden jumps)
10. Have soft tissue or chiropractic care about once a month or more frequently.
